I made the mistake of commenting that I consider myself a 'power user' but that I wasn't using a single add-on, toolbar or plug-in for Internet Explorer so someone needed to show me the error of my ways. Dean Hachamovitch and Mark Harris from the IE7 team came over and walked through a bunch of cool ways to enhance my IE experience, all pulled from the ieaddons.com website. For those of us that write code, Mark also filled us in on an upcoming contest to develop a great add-on for IE7. | ||

I think it is just as important for Microsoft to continue to own the new browser version and ship new features [at least] regularly.
We have tried/tested FF's extensions in different configurations and it is not as happy, or bump free as it is held out to be. Many extensions and especially when one starts to load up on them, hammer FF, badly. Try it - add a mix and observe. Many, cause the browser to slow, or fail, entirely. I am sure it depends upon a lot of factors that are hard to consistently replicate, but it does suggest that people need to add extensions carefully and slowly - so one may isolate any problems one might encounter. I do assess that it's a great idea, but I assess both FF and IE teams need to own these add-ons and extensions and more aggressively support the developers of them - even offering to improve upon them and share the up-side where it is provided. |

I have tried perhaps a dozen or so Firefox extensions over the years and have never encountered any problems. Regardless, there is nothing in the IE add-on model that would guarantee any better performance or stability than in the Firefox extension model. Also, the IE add-on site doesn't appear to offer any better support or review process than the Firefox extension site. ...people need to add extensions carefully and slowly - so one may isolate any problems one might encounter. Your advice would apply to any piece of software, not just Firefox extensions as you imply. |
