Sun Brings Antitrust Suit Against Microsoft | |

Sun Microsystems filed a private antitrust suit against Microsoft on Friday over the software giant's handling of Sun's Java software. The suit, filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., seeks to force Microsoft to pay undisclosed damages, release the underlying source code for Internet Explorer, and release interfaces between Windows and higher-level Microsoft software. The suit also seeks preliminary injunctions to require Microsoft to ship Java with Windows XP and Internet Explorer. AOL Time Warner filed a similar suit against Microsoft in January. Microsoft didn't immediately respond to a call for comment. At the center of the case is Sun's Java software, which lets programs run on many types of computers without having to be modified for each one. Microsoft stripped Java out of Internet Explorer when it launched its new Windows XP operating system last fall. Microsoft said at the time that it feared that including the software could spur Sun to try to block release of XP through legal action. | ||

Found this link in a comment on slashdot. Makes a good point about MS's standpoint
http://www.microsoft.com/java/issues/openletter.htm I just think its funny that they would sue for 1 billion. Is that what they have estimated they have lost since MS has now quit providing the JVM by default (which is what Sun wanted them to do). I just think that Sun is trying to save its financials by not even having to work to make 1Billion. Early 2003... Sun post earnings of 500 Million. Says "we just had another great year!" Whooa!
Sun just had layoffs last year, and now they are paying their lawyers w/ big bucks. Instead of taking care of their employees, they are talking care of their lawyers. The priority of this company is backwards. I guess they have saved enough money from the layoffs, and now they are after MS again. |

| It seems to me like all these companies are jumping on the anti-MS bandwagon, but do they realize, that if (and I personally doubt they will) they do screw Microsoft, they will be in a much worse situation (not as much Sun as AOL, etc.). If the OS market place was fare, and had three or four *real* competitors, can you imagine how difficult it would be for companies like AOL to write software for all the available systems? True, it wouldn't be impossible, but many of those complaining seem to have a horrible time writing for Windows, let a lone multiple OSs. And, if, say, AOL decided not to write the apps for all the systems, their huge dominance in the ISP market would disappear because they wouldn't fully penetrate the market. Maybe I'm wrong, just my thoughts. |

| I always think its kind of funny how these (and other) companies are always complaining that there is no competition, yet none of them are willing to invest the billions of dollars it costs to actually make one. |

LOL at #33... the wording has changed people. Now the java proponents are phrasing things differently... "still being used by many web developers". That says it all.
A lawsuit costs $200 to file. Who knows if Sun will even follow up with a major legal offensive. That was just a SUPER EASE, SUPER CHEAP way to get every tech rag to put a negative blurb against MS. |

Just to correct a few things...
COM+ was/is a competitor for CORBA. Saying CORBA competes with .NET is like saying AMIGA competes with Windows 2000. (Well... I'm sure some would love that statment. :-) .NET is in a league of its own. Java has nothing that compares. IBM's WebSphere w/SOAP toolkit competes with .NET, albiet not very well. I put IBM about 1.5 years behind Microsoft. |
