That has got to be one of the ugliest browser UI's I have ever seen...

#1, Ditto that... I've all but screamed over it idiotic placement of the home, and refresh buttons. I do love how it performs under Vista 5744 - incredibly fast and it loves both SuperFetch and ReadyBoost optimizations - performance alone forces one to re-tool one's muscle memory.

Once used for a good bit, muscle memory does take over and the things I didn't like about button placement mattered a lot less. While the security model has not been tested, I reason that it will be very good when used with protected mode on and while running Vista. I'm not a big fan of tabs - never was, but the design assures they take up less room than in Firefox. Yes, I know... the tabs can be turned off, but I can't recover the space they used...

I wish they had a customization console that let one set up buttons exactly as they want - a simple drag and drop interface where one could place things where they wanted them - why is that so hard? Live does this, STS 1 and WSS 1, 2 and 3 do this - why not IE?

That said, I think I finally get it, and can understand why IE's devs and UI designer would look at me and tell me to shut up... [aside from what I think being irrelevant to anyone other than myself]... it being the UI, very minimalistic... leaving as much screen for the web page - and being a minimalist when it comes to UI design... I guess I should like it and hush up about it - and I would, if moving between button sets on the left and right didn't feel like playing "Pong" on a 70's era gaming STB. That part is just weird, but does make the small footprint possible.

I bet there were more than a few very heated discussion that went on inside Microsoft over this design.

Well, I'm using IE7 right now - this is the most embarrassing excuse for a piece of software I have ever seen. It's utter and complete crap. Why do they have the 'Lock Toolbars' option? You can't even move anything? I want my toolbar icons on the top row, not below the address bar. But NO! I can't have it the way I want it. I disabled tabs and now I have this huge 'command bar' across the screen with nothing on it but two yellow star icons for the favorites. This is rediculous. It wouldn't surprise me to see Firefox's market share double in the near future...

Crybaby!

What crybaby? I want it the way I want it - what's wrong with that???

So this is great - I have to hack my machine now to get it the way I want it. I see. In IE6, I could move the toolbars wherever I want the. I currently have them all nicely aligned in a single row.

Thanks for the link - but I'll leave IE6 installed and continue to use FF or Opera...

Question:

1 - Why can't I remove that stupid 'Live Search' bar from the upper right hand corner of the screen?

and btw - this implementation of search in IE just proves that Microsoft still doesn't get search.

#7 By 17996 (66.235.19.95) at 10/18/2006 10:50:43 PM
#6 - I think the search box can be removed via Group Policy. Not sure why they didn't expose it in the Advanced options box...

And can you elaborate on your second statement?

#8 By 1401 (65.255.137.20) at 10/18/2006 10:57:09 PM
#7 - ok, for example:

If I'm on a page and I want to search for the word 'breasts' - I go up the the search bar, type in my word and select 'Find on page' from the drop down menu. Right? Then what happens? Another search window pops up! So now I have to click again! One would think that it would actually do the search. I would like to see the search criteria highlighted all at once. Instead you have to click a bunch of times as it goes and finds each instance one by one. It's too much damn work. Inline search in Firefox is vastly superior. Microsoft doesn't get search...

#9 - well there's no way in hell I'm using IE7!

Ever hear of Ctrl-F???

#12 By 1401 (65.255.137.20) at 10/18/2006 11:09:01 PM
Yes - I've heard of CRTL-F

It does the same thing as selecting 'Find on Page' does

It's just plain stupid the way they've implemented it.

dude, WE GET IT... you aren't going to use IE7. WE GET IT!

Personally, I like the new browser, but perhaps because I'm accustomed to it, having used it exclusively for ?6? months, through all the beta releases.

#8, stop moaning and install Inline Search for Internet Explorer (http://www.ieforge.com/InlineSearch/HomePage). Does what it says on the tin.

I would just like to clarify for those of you who don't get it...

I WON'T be using IE7.

Why do you have to copy the entire text of the post? You think people are too stupid to get your point? We know YOU are too stupid, but we get it...

IE7 has been out less than 24 hours and already a security flaw...

http://secunia.com/advisories/22477/

That's the MS we all know and love.

#19 By 37 (68.190.114.234) at 10/19/2006 10:44:33 AM
Must be similar to the security flaws found in each build of FF?

I iinstalled IE7 on my office and home desktop systems last night, and gave it a test run. Some nice improvements, but nothing spectacular. At least they are finally starting to add a bit of support for favicons. Still pretty primitive, but better than it was in IE6.

I went to the ACID2 test page, and it still renders this test horribly. Firefox 1.5 doesn't render the ACID2 test properly either, but it is a hell of a lot closer than IE7 is.

All in all, it is an improvement over IE6, but not as big an improvement as it should have been given the 6 years or so it has been since IE6 was released. But, I will keep it installed on my desktop systems, as it is at least better than having IE6 installed. Given the incremental improvements, it would have been more accurate to call this IE 6.5.
