eWeek Labs Drills Down Into Vista's UAC Feature | |

Amid the hullabaloo about how intrusive Vista's User Account Control feature will be to the average user, Microsoft has been quietly ramping up the support infrastructure needed to help companies adopt it. eWeek Labs' work with UAC shows that more work lies ahead, however. With Vista's UAC, Microsoft has finally gotten serious about securing the Windows operating system by limiting a user's rights during day-to-day computer usage. UAC also finally brings the Windows operating system up to speed with just about every other major operating system available today. UAC enables the concept of LUP (least user privilege), where users run with limited privileges for the bulk of their interaction with the desktop. User rights are elevated only when necessary to perform certain administrative tasks. By limiting the user's normal permissions, there is less attack surface on the operating system and less chance for the user to inadvertently—how should we put this—screw things up. | ||

Not a bad article, but this part isn't accurate:
UAC also finally brings the Windows operating system up to speed with just about every other major operating system available today. It isn't even accurate by the own article's standards, as it later says: Organizations that have already implemented LUP with current Windows versions This is an issue of a default setting, not whether the capability was present. Windows (NT) has been "up to speed" for a long, long time. Microsoft does deserve blame for not forcing this issue sooner, though, I think. I also wonder about the example of FileMon as a program that doesn't work well in a low-privilege setting. Duh! How many home/business users are going to run that? |

#1, Thank you - someone needed to reiterate the truth.
They also skip about 80% of what UAC/UAP is doing, and how much better, easier to manage [even in tiny workgroups, or companies] the new access model is. I think the pundits in our industry need their own rating scheme applied - like Vista's new rating and readiness tools - I haven't seen a solid whole number, yet. |
