Microsoft's new operating system Vista will not make it more difficult for anti-virus systems to work, Russian computer security group and potential IPO candidate Kaspersky Lab said on Friday, contradicting rivals. In an open letter this week, U.S. anti-virus provider McAfee accused Microsoft of weakening users' protection by no longer co-operating with computer security groups and denying them access to the core of the Vista system. "From what we have seen of Vista we cannot tell that Microsoft is blocking access to the core," Kaspersky Lab Chief Executive and co-founder Natalya Kaspersky told Reuters in an interview in Paris. | ||

If my count is right, Kaspersky is the second to do so. Sophos discredited Symantec a few weeks ago.

| I may not know the details yet, but let's reason for a bit here. Security Center (CS) is part of Vista to provide basic security (at least what you paid for with you Vista license). Now you decided you want more security so you're buying one of these companies product. They now want to disable CS and replace it with their own version. So far no problem. The question now is, what happens when my subscription to their service expires. Who is securing the box now? Because CS is disabled and their software has become nagware. Will they automatically enable CS upon expiry of their software or not. MS is looking out for its users, so that they will have at least the protection that coMes with the OS. And I agree 100% with MS on this issue. You can't replace CS, but you can add enhance it. |

I wrote a long reply over at CNET on this one.
From where I sit, Symantec and McAffee are pissed more about the future and inevitable kernel process exclusion that they and even Microsoft's devs will have to manage - specifically, the Network Interface Drivers Specification that they will not be available in the same ways as it once was as the industry embraces and moves to a fully signed 64 bit computing and driver model. For me, that cannot happen fast enough. We should all be celebrating that Microsoft's efforts to improve security were real and substantive. Symantec and now, MCAffee appear far more interested in sustaining what amounts to an Internet and systems usage tax - unending updates and access to their suites of less than perfect software. Having tested NIS2007 in BETA for RC1 and RC2, I can only say that surely API's DO EXIST - how else would one build the software many of us have been testing? Finally, having tested many products for Vista's RC builds, we can share [but not necessarily why], that we do intend to recommend Windows Live OneCare for SOHO use, Panda Software for the enterprise and MS's own products for the edge and perimeter of networks with Trend's builds on edge devices/appliances. Those not listed as recommended, will, in our opinion, be better served by building products that will work for, not against, users. |
