Microsoft Recalls Xbox Game Consoles Sold in Japan | |

Microsoft Corp. is recalling the Xbox video-game console in Japan because of a defect two weeks after its debut in the country, setting back its entry into the home turf of rivals Sony Corp. and Nintendo Co. Some of the 250,000 consoles shipped in Japan make scratches on the perimeter of a game disk, said Microsoft Co., the Japanese unit of the world's biggest software maker. The recall comes a week before the console's debut in Europe on March 14. Xbox debuted in Japan on Feb. 22 with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates distributing the first Japanese-version to a 22-year-old student, the first among hundreds of customers lined outside a video store in Tokyo's Shibuya shopping district. The recall will hurt the company's attempt to wrest market share from Sony's PlayStation 2 and Nintendo's GameCube game consoles in their home market, investors said. | ||

Yeah, it's much more likely that there are tons of tiny little saboteurs running around, negating this as MS's screw up, even though most consoles and other devices usually experience problems with contract manufacturers and MS happens to be building the most expensive, complex one which they need to scrimp and shave every penny off of, yeah, yeah, that's the ticket! Sure, stu, I'd be willing to blame the contractor or even just shoddy parts or whatever, but as you said MS has to take responsibility for this. Not just in terms of Q/A, but also because it's well known that the XBox is too expensive and they are looking for cost cutting factors. Plus, contract manufacturing is a fantastic modern thing, but that doesn't mean that MS knows anything about the industry. You can't do nearly zero contract manufacturer work one day and then rev up to several million units of a pretty complicated device in a few months without encountering business issues, supply issues, planning and quality issues, etc...
I don't care who is responsible, but I would bet my soul is not ooooh, evil SABOTEURS!! I was just responding to the idiocy of such a it-can't-be-MS's-fault post. Anon, there were plenty of stories about the PSone and the PS2 so your they-never-write-bad-stuff-about-the-competitors argument is pretty weak too. |

| #6 - even I can see its partly Microsoft's fault - testing is done to find these faults, obviously the testing in Japan hasn't been done as well as it should have been. |

| Oh, by the way, "Microsoft says the fault does not affect game playing and initially said there is no need to issue a product recall, the New Scientist reported earlier this week." So I'd say that even makes them a bit more culpable. |

| They probably said that because, initialy, there were reports that some Japanese gamers were turning the XBOX on its side a la PS2, and it was thought that this caused the scratched discs. |

It doesn't sound like that from the article I'm reading....
http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99992000 Not that that can be ruled out, but why backpedal for them. In this article, MS says tht it's caused when disks are put in the trays, not when spinning... doesn't mention anything about verticle. In fact, MS goes on to say that similar scratching can be caused by other CD and DVD players (blame anybody but MS AGAIN), but Phillips denies ever hearing of such a problem for such devices. |

| Sodajerk, I'm not misplacing blame, I'm just pointing out what happened initialy. Just for comparison, however, Sony continues to have problems with PS2s scratching discs yet they have never addressed the issue. (And no, Sodajerk, I'm not saying that because it also affects Sony that it's OK for MS. Just pointing out that of the 2, MS actually acknowleges and seeks to fix the problem.) |

According to Betanews, the XBOX isn't recalled. It was a misinterpretation of info on their Japanese website.
