Nokia, Symbian score blockbuster Samsung phone win
Time: 00:04 EST/05:04 GMT | News Source: The Register | Posted By: Robert Stein

Thanks Tim. "According to our most reliable sources, who have proved very reliable indeed recently, Samsung has signed a deal with Nokia to license the latter's Series 60 user interface for smartphones. Samsung has been the only significant brand to sign-up for rival Microsoft's SmartPhone platform, and it represents a major breakthrough for Nokia in establishing its credentials as a software licensing company. The Series 60 deal could mark a turning point in the battered fortunes of Symbian, as the UI, formerly known as "Pearl", runs on top of the Symbian OS. The Korean giant's expertise in building CDMA phones gives the anti-Microsoft camp a major boost in the US market. "

Is that sarcasm or do you want complication? Or is it the 15 minutes of battery life the MS Smartphone has that you're really looking forward to, Kaiser?

#2 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/7/2002 3:47:45 PM
Oh, see I thought you were either knocking or defending MS, after all this is an MS site, right? So I ask: are you dismissing the fact that the only large company to sign on for the Stinger is actually pushing a Symbian product sooner if not instead of the Stinger because no one will ever want either the Stinger or a Symbian phone?

If so, that's one perspective. But either way, its lose-lose for MS... their phone OS is 5 times more complicated than Symbian and no one has been able to show a prototype that runs for as much as two hours. Moreover, being the most "complicated" is the most compelling reason to buy into their hype--otherwise, MS can't offer anything to the wireless phone space.

Oh, okay, Sony, Ericcson, Nokia, Samsung, and Microsoft are wrong, and you are right. PDAs, Smartphones, and Wireless Data Access are going no where. The most popular phone in Europe isn't the "Brick" which is twice as big as any of these Symbian phones. Have you looked at some of these Symbian phones, by the way? Even the ones with cameras are pretty compact and simple.

My point is whether or not the market is mature yet, this is a market that MS doesn't belong in (hardware and software), will not succeed in, and yet will be the greatest source of FUD to come from Redmond because without wireless handsets .Net consumer web services aren't all that compelling.

Ceasar, I have to disagree with your comment "...this is a market without consumers". Your consumers here will be Enterprise businesses and large companies.

Also not all of the SmartPhones are the size of a PDA. For instance, the Texas Instrument version of SmartPhones is not much bigger than the Nokia 8290, but has all the functionality of a PDA. There are different sizes of SmartPhones out there, and the largest I've seen so far are the HTC 02 and the upcoming HP 928.

Why logged a laptop and a cell phone if you can logged only one device that can "Almost" do it all? This is coming from a business perspective.

..."the only large company to sign on for the Stinger is actually pushing a Symbian product ..."

Taken from MS Smartphone 2002 site:

Products using the Smartphone 2002 platform are expected to be available from hardware manufacturers in 2002. Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., Mitsubishi Trium, Sendo Ltd. and HTC, the company that designed and builds the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, are the first handset manufacturers to design a range of phones using the Microsoft smartphone platform. Mobile operators VoiceStream Wireless Corp., Vodafone, Telefonica, Telstra Corporation Ltd., and T-Mobil have agreed to provide service for Smartphone 2002.

Also add TI to that list. Sodajerk, are you saying these are not large companies?

#6 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/7/2002 7:06:34 PM
Trium, Sendo, and HTC aren't exactly your household names, are they? Trium is a small Asian cellphone subsidiary of Mitsubishi. And these companies are just phone manufacturers, not carriers or providers. The operators listed are only deploying in small markets (Latin America and some European markets (mostly Spain)). Have any of these companies produced a product yet? No. Are any of these companies the large providers for large markets? No. Has MS provided a prototype that can actually stay powered for more than two hours? No.

And TI is making the chips for this supposedly "first" cellphone kit not making phones; MS was trying to FUD Symbian into death. Symbian seems to be doing just fine.

Do any of these companies compare with NTT DoCoMo, JPhone, Ericcson, Nokia, Qualcomm, Kyocera, Sprint, Motorola, Orange, et al.? They're a start, but no, they are not that substantial in my mind at this time. MS all too frequantly likes to line up partners that don't really pan out. Until I see someone on the street or subway with a MS Smartphone 2002, I won't be convinced that this is a competitive product.

#7 By 1913 (68.14.48.57) at 3/7/2002 7:31:56 PM
Sodajerk, you are right about Trium, Sendo, HTC, and even add HP for that matter, they are not carriers or providers, but I don't see Sprint, AT&T, Verizon, and Nextel making there own cell phones either.

Sprint is offering a cell phone made by Sanyo. Sanyo is not even a household name here in the US, but Sprint is using the phone for its features, and branding the phones with their name ...just like any carriers and providers would do.

Point of my comment ...all of these carriers and providers will look into this technology, and see what they can use and offer the consumers ...no matter who makes the product.

#8 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/7/2002 8:09:17 PM
The companies I list are both manufacturers and carriers. Sanyo is certainly a pretty big name here in America. I would guess about 20% of all home stereo electronics are Sanyo.

And yes, Sprint uses Kyocera (some are still Qualcomm), Sanyo, Motoralo, and Nokia phones (maybe even Samsung, I don't remember). Do you see Sendo, Trium, or HTC in that list?

"all of these carriers and providers will look into this technology, and see what they can use and offer the consumers ...no matter who makes the product." I've heard this for nearly 3 years now, and I am certain that Nokia, Ericcson, Sony, and NTT DoCoMo will never use MS's product.

#9 By 2459 (66.25.124.8) at 3/7/2002 8:20:40 PM
Sodajerk, I believe you mentioned Orange. .
http://www.microsoftmobilitypress.com/site/home/main500.asp?SiteArea=500c
More specifically http://www.microsoftmobilitypress.com/site/extras/pics/normal/oem/GSM_A2_main.jpg

Also add Cingular to that list.

And these companies: mmO2, Orange, SingTel, and TurkCell.

http://www.microsoftmobilitypress.com/site/home/article.asp?PressReleasesID=74&SiteArea=100a

"Waldman announced relationships with the following mobile operators to bring these devices, servers or services to market: mmO2, Orange, SingTel, Telefónica, Telstra, T-Mobil, TurkCell, and Vodafone."

#10 By 3339 (65.198.47.10) at 3/7/2002 8:41:23 PM
Enforcer, this just says relationship whatever that means. As I said, MS has been talking about this for a long time, and I had seen longer lists of "relationships" a year ago.

As the article says, the biggest expectations and most noteworthy "relationship" was with Samsung. Nokia wasn't selling a platform until the 3GSM platform, and they've already got Samsung.

From a speech given by Ballmer at CITA Wireless 2001 in Las Vegas:

"We’re joined in this crusade by a wide variety of partners, people like HP and Casio and Compaq, HTC, Omnisky, IBM, Wireless Knowledge and Qualcomm; many, many partners, systems integrators, who will really help us all build out the next generation of the Internet and particularly the mobile Internet."
--------
"We’ve worked hard with our Windows Media technologies to get the support of the content community. We have a partnership with NTT DoCoMo in Japan to bring Windows Media technology to a variety of their phones."
-------------------
And this is not exactly smartphone related, but shows MS' relationship with others in the wireless industry:

http://www.microsoft.com/PressPass/press/2001/Mar01/03-21EricssonPR.asp

Microsoft Corp. and Ericsson today announced they will unveil their first step in integrating Microsoft® Windows Media™ Audio and Video support on Ericsson handsets tomorrow at the CeBIT trade fair in Hanover, Germany. Ericsson will demonstrate for the first time an Ericsson prototype, which when added to the R520 handset can play back personal music collections and streamed Internet radio using Windows Media Audio. The prototype is being demonstrated at Ericsson's exhibition area at CeBIT (hall 26, stand 68) and illustrates the rapid progress both companies have made in collaborating to bring richer media experiences for consumers to the mobile Internet.

"Multimedia and streaming services are key mobile Internet applications that will further strengthen Ericsson's mobile Internet offering," said Anders Torstensson, vice president and general manager for the GSM and UMTS business unit at Ericsson. "This collaboration as well as our ongoing standardization efforts carried out in the 3GPP (3rd Generation Partnership Project) around wireless multimedia, illustrates Ericsson's commitment to offering richer digital multimedia experiences for our mobile phone customers."

More on Qualcomm: http://www.microsoft.com/PressPass/press/2000/Feb00/QualcommPR.asp

QUALCOMM Inc. (Nasdaq "QCOM"), pioneer and world leader of code division multiple access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq "MSFT"), the worldwide leader in software for personal and business computing, today announced the intent to form a strategic alliance to jointly define and develop advanced wireless, multimedia-capable devices. The companies will focus on developing hardware reference designs for mobile devices, including smart phones based on the Microsoft® Mobile ExplorerTM wireless communication platform and wireless Pocket PCs using QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies' (QCT's) iMSM4100TM Internet Mobile Station Modem (iMSMTM) chipset and system software solutions. QUALCOMM and Microsoft will then work together to promote their solutions for advanced wireless devices to CDMA carriers, handset and device vendors, and application and content developers worldwide.

Sodajerk, You didn't look at any of the pictures I linked to that had Orange-branded MS Smartphones in them, did you.

Again, here's a link to one: http://www.microsoftmobilitypress.com/site/extras/pics/normal/oem/GSM_A2_main.jpg

Sodajerk ...that was exactly my point ...all of the CARRIERS and PROVIDERS (not cell phone manufacturers)out there will look into this technology. No matter who makes them. So don't be surpirse if you see Sendo, Trium, or HTC out there being offered by the carriers.

I don't believe that all of them will make it, but the mobile technology is all heading to this ...Convergence into one device. If MS can provide that technology, it wouldn't matter who manufactures them because it will be offered.

Yes you are right ...Nokia, Ericson, Sony, and NTT DoCoMo will never use MS' product, and Samsung uses the Palm OS for their PDA / Cell phone. Although Samsung has a cell phone that has a small viewer that uses Windows Media Technology for entertainment.

#14 By 1913 (68.14.48.57) at 3/7/2002 9:28:01 PM
Soda J ...it is ok for a company to take this long before putting out a device out there. That is why companies out there have R&D.

Microsoft is not only talking to one company, but to a lot of comapnies out there. There are more than technological aspect here ...Relationship with partners is also important. All of these will not happen over night. R&D doesn't happen over night.

If it takes 3 years before it happens, then so be it. The truth is SmartPhones w/ MS OS will soon be here.

#15 By 1913 (68.14.48.57) at 3/7/2002 11:39:21 PM
Caesar, I have spoken with many people about this kind of device, and they do like the idea of getting their data, email, and work on a document while collaborating on the phone with someone in their office while they are on the road.

As I said in my previous comments ...Enterprise and large businesses will be the primary consumers of these types of devices.

I work in an environment where a person has to have his/ her data on the go, and at the same time be able to receive data anywhere, and talk to the person that works on the data. A device like this can increase productivity. I for one when I travel would rather carry one device than 2 or 3 devices.

By the way here are your choices ...cell phone, cell phone w/ bluetooth technology, pda, wireless pda, smartphones and more. All has defined standards. SmartPhone is just an option that will be offered to the public.

Then again having this type of a device may pretty much kill of Bluetooth technology. Another thing, Bluetooth has hurdles to pass ...primarily IEEE 802.11.

...and yes, you can watch a movie with a Pocket PC.

Are you really that short sighted Ceasar?

If you can purchase an earpiece now for a cell phone, do you think that a SmartPhone / PDA wont have that? Give me a break ...Please use some common sense here.

By the way ...Symbian has a Handheld PC that has a cell phone, and guess what ...it has earpiece and mic for the cell phone. (www.symbian.ca) Oh ...it can also swipe credit cards also. It was introduce to spring comdex yesterday.

The technology is just upon us, and your already killing it. That is really a sign of being short sighted ...I'm sorry.

#17 By 1913 (68.14.48.57) at 3/8/2002 5:47:03 PM
Upon further review of your comment on #24 Ceasar, and I quote ...

"Try to talk on the phone and pull up your data at the same time... you cannot because the display is held up to your ear. Unless you bring with you a earpiece, but then you've increased complexity and added additional devices. "

Since when an Earpiece become an increased complexity to a device? It is just an earpiece ...it is suppose to help. Do you have one for your Nokia, and do you drive and talk w/ out an earpiece with your cell phone? I guess that is to complex for you.
