Update on Ability to Mute the Windows Vista Start-up Sound | |

We heard you loud and clear when it came to discussing our plans to include a default start-up sound that plays as you boot-up Windows Vista: you said you wanted to have the opportunity to mute it if and when you felt it necessary. Your collective voice truly made a difference in this matter, as we've incorporated a way for users to turn off the start-up sound when it's more appropriate to boot silently -- be it when you're mobile, at home or in the office. | ||

Um.... all versions of Windows since back in 3.1 have had the ability to mute the startup sound (as well as any other sound event), you simply go into the Sounds applet in Control Panel, click on the Sounds tab, traverse the list, select "Start Windows" and in the drop-down box select "none".
The only difference that Vista has introduced is now they've put a checkbox on the Sounds tab to make it more obvious that you can turn it on and off. |

There's a bit more to the story than that. Vista will have two startup sounds. One plays right before the Welcome Screen to let you know the computer is ready for you to login (hereafter referred to as the "Ready" sound). The other is the usual Windows Startup sound which plays after you login.
While the Startup sound could be disabled as usual, Microsoft was contemplating whether to allow the Ready sound to be disabled, as among other things (possibly branding), it served as an indicator that all was ok soundwise, allowing you to make any necessary adjustments before you logged in. It's unknown how obtrusive the chosen sound will be, however many expressed to need to be assured no sounds would play at startup due to their respective working environments. Based on this feedback, Microsoft added the checkbox allowing the Ready Sound to be disabled. 5728 is the first public build that contains this addition. Edit: According to a comment on the linked blog: "In addition to adding this checkbox, we will also be removing the actual 'Start Windows' event from the Sounds tab listbox to avoid confusion. And, we're now officially calling the new Windows Vista pre-logon sound the "Windows Startup" sound. What was previously the XP 'Start Windows' sound is now simply the 'Windows Logon' sound and event (and this is 100% customizable.)" #2, thanks for clearing that up. So basically the post-logon sound is simply renamed and the pre-logon sound is new and in current builds can now be turned off. Cool.
They could've written that blog better as there's obvious confusion but you've (and the latter comments on the blog) have cleared that up nicely. |

RC-1 builds released after 5600, [5728] feature the ability to control this and turn it off as needed, or desired. A simple checkbox [on by default], may be cleared to disable the Windows startup sound [yet to be revealed what the new sound will be]. The "Start Windows" sound may also be turned of.
Makes some sense to me - since many laptop users would wish to disable these sounds and many cannot mute their systems until Windows is loaded and running and soft controls are available to support control of built in speakers. *Once running, they could have muted their systems and then shutdown or rebooted and upon start up, that last known state would have been maintained and the systems would have remained silent - so in part, I wonder why user types that needed a silent system on startup would not simply do that. For user types, like radio stations, or medical staff, this was an issue - but again, I suspect that these user types had muted their systems in at least one user session before starting up in say, a control room. |

| Can Intel Macs Apple "sound" be muted? I use my Mac-mini mainly for Windows XP. It's a great machine. Asus built a nice product for Apple. |

#5, Since it's in the OS, yes, one would be able to disable the Windows Startup Sound - regardless of system - even if the audio sub-system remained active, the startup sound would not load and therefore not be played. Drivers, or the signing there of, would not be a factor - so even on unsupported marketing tests such as Boot Camp, it would be available as a control.
