Will Vista stall Net traffic? | |

Thanks to new directory software, Windows Vista could put a greater load on Internet servers. But experts disagree over whether we're headed for a prime-time traffic jam or insignificant slowdown. Microsoft's launch of Windows Vista could slow down or stall traffic on the Net, said Paul Mockapetris, who is widely credited with inventing the Internet's Domain Name System (DNS). Mockapetris believes Vista's introduction will cause a surge in DNS traffic because the operating system supports two versions of the Internet Protocol, a technology standard used to send information over computer networks. "If you adopt Vista, your DNS traffic is going to double," Mockapetris said in an interview. With many DNS servers already running close to capacity, this can have serious consequences, he said. "You're going to see brownouts. All of a sudden, it is going to be mud season on the Internet, where things will just be kind of slow and gooey." | ||

ghehehe... I don't mind at all.
Maybe we can have some sort of Greasemonkey thingy build especially for you which leaves out any newsposting already on digg. Wonder how many news you will still see on this or other websites though. :) |

scientist." Is the guy suggesting Microsoft shouldn't impliment IPv6? "For example, Microsoft designed Vista so PCs will query in the address of the type assigned to the system, the company said. Computers that don't have an IPv6 address will not do IPv6 queries, the company said." Anyone got an IPv6 address behind the corporate firewall yet? |

This is nonsense. If the computer has an IP v4 assigned IP address or is setup to accept from a DHCP server the same, then Vista will query DNS servers using IP v4. If the computer has an IP v6 assigned IP address or is setup to accept from a DHCP server the same, then Vista will query DNS servers using IP v6. And, this guy is the "chief scientist?"
NotParker, I don't know of any major corporation, including Microsoft, that is using IP v6 behind their firewalls or within their corporations's networks. Why bother? There are A, B, and C class non routable ranges of IP v4 addresses to anyone that wants to use them inside their private network. The system works - don't fix what ain't broke! |

There are enormous benefits to IP-V6 and nearly all have zip to do with the increased address space. IPV6 will happen and adding the quad's for any 32 bit based site is entirely possible. We did it as an experiemnt and published our company website as among the first commercial sites on the IPV6 BB. It was just an experiment, but proved how one could tunnel between V4 and V6 BB.
The potential in IPV6 is found in the increased bits per packet available - 4x over IPV4 and when it comes to software "aware" applications and vice versa, this opens an amazing world of possibilities - for example, OOPS for FPGA's vice ASIC based computing.... read the dynamic restructuring of circuits on the fly to execute code more efficiently. While it certainly will not be quick - complete virtualization of systems and networks and all that one runs upon them, will come and it will need those extra bits. We are all running the last OS'es and on the last fixed networks of their kind. From here on out, hardware "is" software - at least in the minds of those that will obviate IPV4. Mr. Gates is right again.... it is all just a software problem. I just can't imagine what our great grandkids will be doing with these systems - they better cure disease, and hunger and all, or something truly great. |
