EXACTLY! Finally, a few people are starting to spend some time with RC1 and speak about the issues I have been raising. The UI is as I have said, like a gilr you really like that for some reason you can't explain, just bugs the life out of you..."
"It's consistency, stupid!" That is what comes to mind in window after window and feature after feature... Like some classes date that just can't dress themselves.
On top of this is what one can feel - I mean, a really gorgeous OS underneath - RC1 simply hauls the mail - so damn fast, Aero and all - smoking fast - even on a laptop.
Back to the mess...
I have spent the last 70 hours or so in a continuous exploration of RC1. A nearly sleepless effort to find and explore every click and every feature... The inconsistencies are staggering.
I can see the intent - which was so good, but the execution has been just dreadful. I have been just as responsible for building messes, too - I know what it is like to work your guts out on a software project and watch people grind themselves up. Grant it, our projects are puny by comparison, but so are our resources. Using this epxerience, I know what it is like to dig in, work even harder and ensure the software ships. One think I learned over and over is that no matter what, what one does ship had better be 100% consistent. I am a fanatic about it and we'll spend weeks on the smallest of details - all to ensure that the software is entirely consistent. The same is true of our hardware - every wire had better be in exactly the right place or there is hell to pay.
What bugs me so badly about Vista is that Microsoft has had enough time - enough people and certainly enough money to ensure that Vista is consistent - it isn't. The quality just is not there in the UI.
Qaulity is there in spades in the underlying bits. Vista performs every task so well and so quickly - VPN, network, printing, IIS.... underneath it moves.
The UI's object model hauls, too - ultra fast. However, the UI itself is so bad that i just can't get past it. It's a mess. I do reason that there is no excuse at all. None. Not given the time they have had and the resources they have.
This UI is going to enrage people - of all types. It's still a lot better than OSX, which is no high-water mark by any means, but it is not of the qaulity that it should be.
