#1, What????
If you're opinion is restricted to off the shelf 1,000 - 1,500 dollar Vista Ultimate, to Home Premium Edition PC's similar to current MCE 2005 system, then perhaps your comparison is relevant.
But to suggest that a computer cannot participate as a member in a professional audio and video processing and distribution system is unsupportable.
Considering that all pro-audio and commercial set ups make implicit use of hardware, firmware, software and transmission lines, and an interface to control them, your position seems inconsistent.
Microsoft software, specifically, it contribution to an Open Standard [VC-1] provides the highest possible content quality. "just view any HDNET broadcast and compare it to any other HD broadcast - it's not even a contest, VC-1 slaughters all other forms. As an example only, I refer to VC-1 and Microsoft's ability to process digital signals, and work with a very diverse group of hardware and software partners.
I assert that a Vista PC, and Microsoft working with many partners have perhaps THE BEST chance of making the processing and commercial and personal distribution of pure HD audio and video not only possible universally, but highly probable.
To dismiss what they are doing as being just a "toy" suggests a very unbalanced and naive view that seeks to preserve an elitest posture opposite HD digital media. Imagine what HD content will do for all forms of education, self-study and continuous professional education - via a PC connected to a network filled with information and experiences of that quality, one can envision a very different and better world. That is but one example, and there are countless others across every aspect of life. HD Stealth Navigational Imagery and Surgery will change so much for so many. The same is being done with audio and in ways that demand a strong PC and an equally strong "platform" - Vista is an excellent extension to an already amazing start with MCE original, Harmony 2004, and Symphony in 2005.
I'll predict now, MS will emerge as an enormous and leading company in digital media and nearly every aspect inherent to it.
