What Vista can learn from Leopard | |

Apple Computer let developers know this week that its next Mac OS X version, Leopard, should spring onto store shelves next spring. It also lifted the veil somewhat on features planned for the operating system, but held back on some details. Part of the secrecy was to prevent Microsoft from copying Apple's ideas, CEO Steve Jobs suggested. "We don't want our friends to start their photocopiers any sooner than they have to," he said. | ||

How about what Leopard can learn from Vista? (Or Apple can learn from Microsoft?)
Where is Apple's equivalent to the .NET Framework? Where is their WinFX? Core Animation seems like it'll offer some of what Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF, nee Avalon) offers, but will it be based on some sort of managed code? Will they have something like XAML? A friend of mine is a die-hard Mac fan, but when it comes to Microsoft's developer platform, he has nothing but praise for Visual Studio and .NET. In a video, I saw a demo of an app using Core Animation to fly album art around. It was said to be reduced from the prior version from 2000 to 1000 lines of code. But why not show us the code? It's a *developer* conference, after all. I remember seeing videos of Microsoft's PDC keynotes where they actually have a developer show you the code behind the demos. Apple would be wise to do the same. |

Here's a funny comment from the article....
"David Price: ... Long-term answer, which I have been saying for YEARS: Bill, take some of your billions, buy the best and brightest programmers in the world, and make a brand-spanking-new OS absolutely positively from scratch. No DOS, no Windows, no xNIX, no backwards compatibility; start completely over and do it right. Kids, can you say "21st century?"" They did that already. It's called NT. Look how long it took NT to become mainstream: introduced in 1993; became mainstream in 2001 with the release of XP. Do you expect MS to create *another* OS that will undoubtedly take longer to become mainstream? And if you don't have compatibility, who will buy it? NT would've been dead in the water if it couldn't run Win 3.1 and 95 apps. |

They did that already. It's called NT.
And they are doing it again with MSR projects like Singularity. Vista has also had many subsystems written from scratch and moved into user space. Backwards-compatibility isn't the problem as many legacy APIs are routed through new subsystems as the old ones get replaced. It's not the same old code. Apple has their own issues with code quality/security and, as I and others predicted, the issues have increased with Apple's move to x86 and the standard PC platform, as well as increased reliance on open source code. They are now open to many of the same issues *n*x OSes are because of this. Where is Apple's equivalent to the .NET Framework? Where is their WinFX? Core Animation seems like it'll offer some of what Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF, nee Avalon) offers, but will it be based on some sort of managed code? No equivalent to .NET, but Objective-C now has a garbage collector. No info on interaction with the GC yet though. So it is managed code, though likely still not verifiable code. |

| It's slightly wrong to compare Singularity with the NT project. Singularity is a research project, whereas NT was ordained from the start to be a retail product, the the future direction for their OSes. |

| Novell has had it for ages, also (and I like their implementation of it better). Anyhow, Apple certainly shouldn't be throwing stones at Microsoft for copying. |

| I relied on the versioning in VMS when writing code in there. Worked great. |
