For Microsoft, the coming days of Black Hat Briefings hacker scrutiny in Las Vegas could make or break its claim that Windows Vista is the "most secure operating system ever." The software maker will use the August 2-3 security conference to showcase a wide range of security features and functionality being fitted into the successor to Windows XP. But even as the Redmond, Wash., company's hype machine swings into high gear, independent researchers worry that the venerable hacker powwow is being reduced to a glorified product demo for a rich sponsor. | ||

This can't be right. Even with all their arrogance, I can't believe MS would claim that Vista is the most secure OS ever. Maybe it's the most secure version of Windows ever (whatever that means), but even that needs to be determined over time, not before the product even ships. Look at what happened to Larry Ellison with his 'Unbreakable' Oracle marketing campaign.

You're right. They have never made such a claim. MS has stated that kernel patch protection (and other security measures) isn't a panacea.
It should also be noted that Vista kernel patch protection only applies to x64 editions just as with XP, and though this proof-of-concept exploit uses Vista x64 Beta 2 as its target, the technique is mostly CPU based, using hardware virtualization support to subvert the OS running above it. The article's author also doesn't seem to know of MS' past participation in Black Hat and similar conferences. |
