VC-1 has been a SMPTE standard for some time now.
It was standardized in April of this year as SMPTE 421M. There are also companion documents, SMPTE RP227 and SMPTE RP228. http://www.smpte.org/news/press_releases/003_06.cfm “Standardization of VC-1 represents over two years of work by more that 120 individuals representing over 75 media and entertainment companies,” says Ingo Höntsch, Chair of SMPTE’s Video Compression Technology Committee, which oversaw development of the VC-1 standard, “and many companies throughout the industry have been promoting VC-1 integration for some time now.” The VC-1 documents are SMPTE 421M-2006, “VC-1 Compressed Video Bitstream Format and Decoding Process” - the Standard itself, as well as two supporting Recommended Practices, SMPTE RP227-2006 “VC-1 Bitstream Transport Encodings” and SMPTE RP228-2006 “VC-1 Decoder and Bitstream Conformance”. |

I'm very happy to hear it finally happened. I wasn't aware because this was the quietest, most inconsequential occurrence. But "for some time now"? Three months is quite "some time." Unfortunately, this is the paper standard and licensing still has to go through mpegla which has not finalized licensing yet. This post was edited by sodajerk on Sunday, July 09, 2006 at 12:50. |

I respectfully disagree about quiet and inconsequential. Standardization was accompanied by the usual press releases and tech press articles. VC-1 is also a mandatory codec for HD-DVD, FVD (forward versitle disc), and BlueRay, and AFAIK every HD-DVD that has shipped has used VC-1. It's also a required codec for Digital Video Broadcasting—Handheld (DVB-H) and is being considered for other sandards. This is far from quiet and inconsequential.
