Understanding Virtual PC Express for Windows Vista | |

First off, Virtual PC Express is being offered only in the Windows Vista Enterprise SKU which is only available to Enterprise Customers with Software Assurance agreements. Its important to note that Virtual PC Express won't be widely distributed to the general Windows Vista user-base. At least not in the near future. Virtual PC Express is limited to only 1 single Virtual PC Image and supports Windows 9x, NT, 2000, XP, MS-DOS, and OS 2. Its designed to give Enterprise users the ability to use a earlier version of Windows for application compatibility if needed for applications that cannot be made to work on Windows Vista. Essentially it gives Enterprises the ability to upgrade and still be able to use their older software. Software Assurance customers get the right through licensing to run two operating systems - Vista and the "Guest" OS. Virtual PC will also offer 64-bit support as well. | ||

| Is it just me, or does it seem silly to offer this as a feature when they're giving away Virtual Server for free? It sounds like they're offering the license for both the host (Vista) and the secondary OS, though? That's the only upside I see to it (if that is indeed how the licensing works), but even that seems strange--they don't even support 9x, NT, and MS-DOS anymore.... |

| So Vista "Ultimate" the SKU that was supposed to include everything... for a price, will not have MUI and Virtual PC. indeed it looks more and more as a "great deal". |

The Windows Vista Product Guide lists MUI and VPC Express as included in the Ultimate SKU. Though it says the MUI is for business customers running Ultimate, I think that's just because its the primary target audience, not because there are restrictions.
AIUI, VPC Express is supposed to come in the RC builds (unless this has changed recently). I'm with Fritz. Ultimate means ULTIMATE.
It will be interesting to see just how much is missing from "Ultilmate". TL |
