It hasn't been a good month for Microsoft's Google-fighters. So bad that one left abruptly last week, and another decided this week to switch teams.

| Microsoft has lost more top management in the past year or two... Makes you wonder if the next generation of leadership can step up or not. |

msft is adding at a pace of 5000 employees per year. those additions are at all levels of the organization. we (the public) hear about 5 departures and that is supposed to mean something?

| Microsoft has been losing a lot of staff that built the company into the massively successful company it has become. Just because they're being replaced doesn't mean anything. |

| People come and go all the time. People from that level love challenges and they move on to find new ones. Everyone is replaceable and it is not important that people leave but who you bring into to replace them. The big story should be people leaving but the names that come in to replace them. |

| Of course it's important to replace those who are leaving with quality people, but when a huge number of the people who built one of the world's most important company leave in a relatively short amount of time, something is wrong. Vic Gundotra today, Mark Zbikowski a few days ago (Microsoft's longest-term employee minus Gates and Ballmer), Gates himself... I'm not talking about people like Scoble leaving the company, I'm talking about the company's founders. Those three employees have something like 75 combined years of service to the company. They've turned a little software company into what it is today. And those people are just in the last week or two. What about Allchin and all the others over the past year or two? |

Hey maybe Microsoft without Gates = Apple without Jobs. Or then again, maybe not.
Maybe its Microsoft without Gates = Sun with McNealy. |

Todd, you're being a bit silly.
Look at it this way. How many of the first 1000 microsofties are still with the company? I would wager that 90% of them were gone BEFORE the past 12 months. So, what is another 5% (50 people) of the original 1000 going to matter? Sure, they are missed... but no more (perhaps LESS) than the first 90%. Its just normal turnover, that is reported as "alarming" or "out of the ordinary" because the techrags have a slow day. And you lapped it up like the PREDICTABLE consumer that they know you to me. another way to look at it is that msft's turnover is, i don't know, 5%. | Again, I'm not talking about normal turn over. This isn't something I read in the article and thought "Oh no! Microsoft is doomed!!" This is something I've been thinking about quite a bit over the past year or so. I don't care that the average age of an employee is something ike 32.5 or that they're replacing x number of employees a year. I'm talking about the founders of the company - the people who made Microsoft what it is today. And just because in the past couple of a years a huge percentage of them have left does not have me predicting doom and gloom. I'm just have my doubts that a new generation of leadership can do the job the past generation has done. |

fine. i'll give u the benefit of the doubt. but i'm curious... do u feel the same way about apple? i mean, didn't they lose their top scientist earlier this year? Dont ask me his name. | Yeah, yeah, my mind is nothing but a little pawn of the mass media. How do I feel about Apple? Well, I look at how lost they were in the late-80s and the early to mid 90s without Jobs (or another leader). I know that's not what you're asking, but I don't keep up with Apple the way I do with Microsoft (hence the example I gave is the one everyone knows about). |
