With Microsoft struggling to keep up with the demand for Windows Vista Beta 2, tech personality Chris Pirillo has taken the initiative to publish the 3.2-gigabite download using BitTorent. But Microsoft recommends against using a third party to obtain Vista code. Those eager to try out the first public release of Microsoft's next generation operating system have been met with slow download speeds and timeouts. The Redmond company has even recommended that users place an order for a DVD copy rather than deal with the download wait times. In turn, Pirillo and Jake Ludington have setup VistaTorrent.com to serve a torrent of Beta 2. Users can take advantage of the decentralized peer-to-peer technology to download at much faster speeds than Microsoft is currently able to offer. | ||

| #2: I'm serious. BitTorrent technology could be very useful here since this type of distribution is what BT was designed to do efficiently. I could see MS being concerned with some type of injection attack, but I don't know enough about the BT low-level stuff to comment more. |

MS Research has long had a torrent replacement which is not dependent upon all nodes being available - the torrent folks had a fit over it! You'd likely find at least a portion of that technology supporting many MS software distributions.
MS has some serious clues available to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention... future networks being built, accessed and dynamically formed based upon the total virtualization of many named spaces - needs/requirements and very advanced peer based technologies where advanced ID's and authentication methods allow not just the right processes to connect up, but the right people - that is Vista's real strength - being the first OS designed to support such network presence. I'd pay as much attention to the term, "Knowledge Networks" as one wisely did .NET and what it truly meant. |

| I'm unclear why servers are being overloaded. I'm fairly certain they use Akamai for this type of work. |
