PC makers attack new Windows fees | |

PC makers and several states allege that new Microsoft licensing agreements, arrived at under the proposed antitrust settlement between the software maker and the U.S. Justice Department, impose harsher terms on some manufacturers than agreements currently in place. Under the new agreements, which Microsoft began putting into place late last year to satisfy the Consent Decree between the company and the government, the top two PC makers will pay $4 more per copy for Windows, according to a deposition by a senior Microsoft executive. | ||

Uniform pricing means some companies pay more than they did in the past. Maybe these PC makers should have not supported the lawsuit?

#2 - It's really quite simple. Today each OEM negotiates their own prices. Some receive preferred treatment, others don't. So now the DOJ says "One price for all."
That means some pay less, some pay more, but everybody pays the same. Personally I think uniform pricing is a good thing, makes life easier. |

It's spelled Settlement.
Are all 20 of them unhappy? What about the ones paying lower costs? |

The article claims it is only HP and Compaq. It mentions 3 companies, MicronPC, Concentric and Systemax as being in support of it.
It also quotes Ballmer as saying they specifically arranged the new pricing structure so as not to profit. Again that means some people get lower prices, others get higher prices than they had before. |

The pricing changes will need to be accepted and are a good thing; I think it's really just a few of the OEMs that are whining and will have to deal. On the other hand, renegotiating patent agreements that eliminate the OEMs ability to retain and protect their own patents is unacceptable and should be modified. I think outside of pricing, a baseline uniform contract should be used, but all separate agreements with OEMs which serve to protect the OEMs should be preserved and written into this "standard" contract.
It'll be interesting to see if Dell can continue to gobble up marketshare since they have the biggest discounts, hence the biggest price increase, won't it? |

Regardless, this is the direct result of the lawsuit. Welcome to the "better" world. And #2, if you want their profit margin... just look it up in their annual report. You'll notice that it is VERY similar to your friends SUN, IBM and APPLE. But it won't be as low as AOL/TW, because they got sucked into selling low-margin magazine subscriptions. Hahaha. |

#13 - It's not quite the same price for all. They can give discounts based on volume, they just have to give the same volume discounts to everybody. I.e. if both Compaq and Dell sell 5 million units, they both pay $x. Whereas Gateway who only sells 3 million pays $y, where $X > $Y.
