MSN Grows Faster in Number of Unique Users Than Any Other Portal in the United States | |

The MSN® network of Internet services today announced that according to the latest Jupiter Media Metrix1 reports, MSN has achieved an incredible reach with more people coming to MSN for many of their online activities. MSN experienced larger unique-user growth in the United States than the competition and through its deep relationships with leading content and services providers has notably increased its number of unique users in key channels. “Our strategy of forming strong business relationships is working. MSN has helped the number of ESPN.com users grow by more than 60 percent since the relationship started last September2,” said Yusuf Mehdi, vice president of MSN at Microsoft Corp. “Our providers are seeing the results; we continue to see top performance in key areas; and most important, consumers are benefiting from the combination of strengths." | ||

Anon, I use multi-browser windows similarly to you, just not as much--that's a lot of windows--I know Opera handles it well. But you wanted to know about using a portal...
I use my.yahoo as a starting point. I've got my stock portfolio, and another portfolio of about 100 tech companies on the left margin so I can follow the industry, the main portion of the page displays 5 sections (world news, current events, tech news, etc...) each with about 10 articles--this is where I find most of the newswire and major content vendor (Reuters, AP, etc...) materials. I have local weather listings and weather back home, I have a cheap flight locator which checks the 2 or 3 places I'm thinking of traveling, a package tracker, a daily horoscope, a couple of my favorite cartoons, sports headlines for 5 of the teams I want to follow, a sports calendar featuring the games I want to know about and scores once played, a daily view of the tv listings (by my area cable company) that I can edit the channels as I wish, I have a daily photograph, a list of intersting links that Yahoo has selected, movie listings and times for local theatres, a map/address interface, top books, movies, and albums in sales, a display of my yahoo mail folders and contents, a calendar (I don't use it but you can never have too many calendars), and a calculator... I dropped the wine of the day, but all in all, that's a fair bit of info on one page and its all personalized to me. Do I duplicate or enhance all of these things by browsing other sites? Yes, but it's a quick start, a great consolidator, and a way to capture sites or info I wouldn't necessarily know about. |

MSN was great before the latest version, which has basically ruined it as far as I'm concerned.
It used to be that you could have your homepage all nice and customized, with your local weather, stocks, news, etc. Now you are forced to click on "My MSN" before you get that information, and it's impossible to bookmark the My MSN page as your homepage. I know it seems trivial, but it's VERY anoying. Ever since they made that change, my homepage has been Google. Loads instantly, and it's the page I go to the most anyway. I then use my Links bar to go from site to site. As far as SDI interfaces... they are pretty cool. That would be one feature I would love to have in IE. They've already added it to many other MS products, like Visual Studio.NET, so perhaps that will be in IE 6.5? :-) |

And I still wouldn't care because I don't like portals.
