Anon, I use multi-browser windows similarly to you, just not as much--that's a lot of windows--I know Opera handles it well. But you wanted to know about using a portal...
I use my.yahoo as a starting point. I've got my stock portfolio, and another portfolio of about 100 tech companies on the left margin so I can follow the industry, the main portion of the page displays 5 sections (world news, current events, tech news, etc...) each with about 10 articles--this is where I find most of the newswire and major content vendor (Reuters, AP, etc...) materials. I have local weather listings and weather back home, I have a cheap flight locator which checks the 2 or 3 places I'm thinking of traveling, a package tracker, a daily horoscope, a couple of my favorite cartoons, sports headlines for 5 of the teams I want to follow, a sports calendar featuring the games I want to know about and scores once played, a daily view of the tv listings (by my area cable company) that I can edit the channels as I wish, I have a daily photograph, a list of intersting links that Yahoo has selected, movie listings and times for local theatres, a map/address interface, top books, movies, and albums in sales, a display of my yahoo mail folders and contents, a calendar (I don't use it but you can never have too many calendars), and a calculator... I dropped the wine of the day, but all in all, that's a fair bit of info on one page and its all personalized to me. Do I duplicate or enhance all of these things by browsing other sites? Yes, but it's a quick start, a great consolidator, and a way to capture sites or info I wouldn't necessarily know about.
