The trailer started out with what appeared to be the ashes of Earth, remnants of street signs swaying in the wind. Out of the haze walked the most realistic looking Master Chief ever imagined, assault rifle in hand. Flashes of a familiar face cut in and out through static to set the stage for what appeared next. Once the familiar Halo theme started, the scene panned out across a large valley revealing Covenant ships hovering over the surface as a massive structure blasted out of the ground below. The final words ... “This is the way the world ends” were followed by the call to action “Finish the Fight—2007”. Our mouths are still wide open in awe at how amazing the trailer looked. | ||

the halo trailer was just the last tiny bit of sugar on the top of the cherry on the top of the amazing desert that was the press conference. I've witnessed Microsoft's competition fail many times in the past (wordperfect/novell/netscape/aol/real/apple/etc) but sony has simply HANDED Microsoft the leadership baton. The newbie Microsoft is setting terms now. Quite amazing.

I watched both press conferences, and I was just amazed at how comfortable Peter, Bill etc. were with where they are now, and where they are headed. They have really shown that paying $299 or $399 is a drop in the bucket compared to the functionality you are truly getting with your console. Playstation played alot of copy cat and catch up. Announced an "out of the ballpark" price, has elected to force a non-standards format (blu-ray) to gamers (which incidentally isn't out of the woods yet...it's about 50/50). Overall, MS finally took this E3 hands down. Nintendo did OK too. I loved the opening skit with all the different uses of their new controller. That was pretty sweet. |

Sony's E3 conferences are always boring but this one really cut the cake. In the year where they are to introduce the newest version of their most important product they seem to be completely uninterested in making it a success. With every presentation they always concentrate on the numbers and showing clips of new games, but they never try to get you excited on their product. This years presentation makes me wonder if they really have a clue about what they want to achieve with the PS3. It actually motivated me to finally decide on buying a 360: I really have no faith in the PS3 at all.
Microsoft is and has always been great at presenting themselves and their products. Not just the Xbox but basically every product they have. I have frequent complaints about MS's products and their way of doing business but not about how they try to win me over for something new. They are just really great about that. And Nintendo is what I look out for most every E3. Of all three competitors they seem to know best what way they are heading. Their conferences are always exciting and the presentation of the Wii was really this years highlight to me. There will definitly be a Wii standing next to my 360 before the end of the year. It seems like a great console for the kind of games that you can't really find on the Xbox. Can't beat Mario, Metroid and Zelda. :) |

| Agree with nearly all the sentiments here - Sony seem to be shooting themselves in the foot trying to out-do Live! with one hand and the Wii-mote with the other. Their version of Live! appears to be nothing but another source of revenue from gamers paying for features which would otherwise have been included in the game and their controller looks like the engineers were given 3 weeks to rip out the DualShock and throw in something, anything, to dilute the P.R. that Nintendo is getting right now. And if that's not enough they decided to offer a hacked up version for $499 and the actual version for $599! Sure it has blue-ray (although I have no idea what AWBrian is on about calling it "non standards" - unless he's hade HD-DVD the standard!) but honestly that's a lot of money to spend on a console that is yet to have a killer game up for launch. Very dissapointing. I myself will be getting the Wii - it's going to be the most fun to play. If Nintendo price it right they could have a real winner on their hands - I can see a lot of people buying the 360 and a Wii-volution. |

What I meant was blu-ray is NOT the industry standard for movies or games. Nor is HD-DVD. Nor will either be standard for a long time to come. The standard is...DVD9...as we have it now. Sony is forcing it's gamers to pay more for a console to cover the cost of this blu-ray technology. Why would I do that when we have no idea what format HD movies will be on in the video stores for a couple years. If HD-DVD wins...guess what...my PS3 won't be playing HD movies! So now I just pissed that money away. |

| While I agree competly that they destroyed Sony's press conference, my view was that Nintendo's was better than both of them. Really can't wait to play with "Wii", so to speak. There is even the possibility if its cheap enough, that Wii will become the top console over the next 2 years and being a fan of innovation, I hope they do for the sake of originality thats missing in gaming these days. |

so, what effect will messenger/spaces/vista integration have on all this? never underestimate the SCALE of windows' user base.
i also gotta say that msft's xbox division has had an amazing 5 years now. its good to see that the well-done job didnt go unnoticed at msft, where we see robbie bach (amongst others) getting nice promotions lately. |

Agreed, Nintendo looked good. The speaker however was overly conceited and belittling. The opening skit with all the Wii games using the Wii controller was indeed entertaining.
But it's not the controller that will sell the Nintendo. It will again be the games. |

As it should be really! But it will be the controller that sells the Wii (like hotcakes most likely) for a very simple reason that I didn't immediately notice until someone else pointed it out. In the past many addons failed primarily because they were... addons. Developers couldn't target a particular addon without either limiting their market to those users that have the addon or to write the game for the basic controller and tack on additional features (think force feedback here). With the Wii, the standard controller handles motion sensing, accelerometer etc meaning that developers can write specifically for it knowing every single Wii sold will have the controller. This is also why Sony is rushing in to try and get a similar feature "standard" in their console because they know that the addon, no matter how good will never be as successful! As a result, yes it will be the games that sell the Wii (as it should be) but it will be the Wii-mote that allows all those games to be sold - many of which will be sold to people that are just looking for fun to play games rather than those requiring a 50 page manual, memorisation of 32 keys and several hours of dedicated gaming daily (yes I'm exagerating but you get my point I'm sure). Additionally because the console itself isn't focused on the number of polygons, shaders and light sources it means that publishers don't need to spend as much money on graphic designers etc and can focus on the gameplay. Nintendo still have a way to go, but as I mentioned if the controller is as good as it looks and if they price it right, they will own the market. |

| #8 - yeah shame the Gamecube didn't sell better then as it had some fantastic titles, problem was that the press labled it for kids and it didn't have the DVD drive to interest adults. |

Stupid thing thinks I'm too young to watch it. I'm 47. I put my BD in, and it blocked me.
And I don't see a way around it short of probably clearing my Cache, which I can't do right now. TL |
