I think it can now be safely said, in hindsight, that Microsoft's entry into the browser business and its subsequent linking of the browser into the Windows operating system looks to be the worst decision—and perhaps the biggest, most costly gaffe—the company ever made. I call it the Great Microsoft Blunder. | ||

Some valid points perhaps, but he forgets to consider one very important thing: opportunity cost. If Microsoft had never developed IE, they would not be in the place they are today, they wouldn't have the influence they have today, they wouldn't have learned the lessons they know today, etc. IE may be by far the biggest culprit for the security woes of Windows, but that was an error of implementation, not its mere existence.
His claim that Microsoft should drop IE altogether is a bit ridiculous, though. What other company would voluntarily remove a product from the market when it owns 80-90% of that market? Dvorak says stuff like this all the time, but I guess I can't really blame him. It can't be easy turning out article after article like this week after week, and the guy's gotta eat. |

"People will not stop buying Microsoft Windows if there is no built-in browser"
Some people would stop buy Windows if Microsoft was dumb enough to not offer a browser. 1995 Revenue: 5.9 Billion 2005 revenue: 39.79 Billion I wish I had such a "costly gaffe" revenue stream. |

The Great PC Magazine Blunder
It is because of blowhards like Dvorak, that I stopped buying PC Magazine long ago. At about the time of the anti trust lawsuits against Microsoft , it developed an anti Microsoft political view. It has kept up that rant to various degress since then. It is just tiresome and boring. Meanwhile, PC Magazine continues to rally behind Firefox despite major security holes in the software that it barely mentions to its readers if at all. And its recommendation for Opera - what's with that - it market share is almost non existent. The "company" that, used to sell one version without ads and another that was ad supported, had to give their product away completely just to stay in the game. |
