Microsoft Says Recovery from Malware Becoming Impossible | |

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla.—In a rare discussion on the severity of the Windows malware scourge, a Microsoft security official said businesses should consider investing in an automated process to wipe hard drives and reinstall operating systems as a practical way to recover from malware infestation. "When you are dealing with rootkits and some advanced spyware programs, the only solution is to rebuild from scratch. In some cases, there really is no way to recover without nuking the systems from orbit," Mike Danseglio, program manager in the Security Solutions group at Microsoft, said in a presentation at the InfoSec World conference here. | ||

So Windows boxes get deeply owned so often that MS is recommending businesses have an automated way to nuke and reinstall:

I had to post something anti-MS after reading how Gates & Ballmer schemed to get Paul Allen's shares back into their hands in the event Allen died from Hodgkin's, and MS losing out in EU when they tried to steal the Frutiger font and rename it Segoe for Vista. |

Ideally, as an admin, you should have everything prepared for such situations, anyways. First, either create an image and answer file or use RIS to install Windows quickly and just how you like it. Next, make use of Active Directory to push out applications and Windows settings. Next, either use remote profiles or configure profiles to store just My Documents and Favorites remotely. Finally, make sure that no company data is ever saved to the hard disk (for example, everything should be saved to network drives or to My Documents, which is redirected to a network folder).
Do all of that and replacing a workstation takes no more than an hour. Keep a few workstations preloaded and ready to deploy and the user has almost no downtime, whatsoever. Malware isn't really an issue if you have this in place. We did at my last job and we never bothered to clean systems of malware; we simply replaced the computer and nipped the problem in the bud, instead of "hoping" that we cleaned out everything. |

Latch, how can you say such things about people for expressing their views on a Windows and Microsoft centric site?
As a public consumer of this site's content, I'd like to know why you think that is in any way productive. Don't be confused about why I am asking..., speak your mind, but if you respect anyone at all, please help this old man understand how you think - I truly am curious. Is it that people these days cut so deeply to casually that they do not know what impact it may have, or how it makes them appear...? Is it that such behavior is now acceptable, or normal amongst the people you are around most often? I mean, when I was younger we played pretty rough, but talk like that would always result in a pretty heated exchange of real blows -which people reserved for really extreme circumstances. #5, Is dead on and doing it right and Microsoft makes it [managing networks and systems], pretty easy and above all, "consisent." I bet #5, keeps the stuff out of his networks with well integrated network and host IPS and IDS systems, too! - it isn't hard! I mean, even very small networks [SBS w/ISA], can keep it out and blow on images in minutes - all wizard based stuff these days.... Microsoft isn't saying anything new here, either - "Flatten the host" has always been their recommendation. Made sense long ago and still does. The spin here is attempting to cast a much more negative view than is actually out here - as though...."It's become that BAD...." That is simply untrue - it's always been that bad - relative to a) protections and b) management systems - which have also advanced and I assess, ahead of criminal malware authors and naive users. May be it is as simple as some form of entertainment for you, Latch - I hope that is all it is and not an indication of a more serious mental defect. It it's the latter of the two, AW Webmasters need an easy button to set your text color to the color of their background.... |
