| Personally, it feels like a step back from the earlier Office 12 beta screenshots I saw. I thought the subtle flat-gray with gradient window with the color-highlighted (similar to Vista) tabs looked pretty slick, though it didn't look finished at that point. This is sort of like light-blue overload. |

| Let me preface this comment by saying that I like the new UI in Office 12. But here's what I don't understand. Take the 'Paste" icon for example. It is now three times as large as the previous Office versions icon, and it has the word Paste below it. I already know it's paste. I've known for the past 10 years that the yellow clipboard with a sheet of paper in front of it represents the paste function. That's what an icon is for, a visual representation of a task, or function or whatever. Why do they all of a sudden need to tell me that this icon is for pasting things off the clipboard? I can see the example where the icon has text below it with an arrow to expand a drop down, such as with the Format As Table icon. But basically the ribbon is kinda like what you would have in Office 2003 if you were to take three rows of toolbars and put every icon you can fit onto them (except they don't change contextually based on the task at hand - which is very cool in Office 12) |

| crhis, usually in MS products you can choose to have large icons, small icons, icons+text, and icons with no text. |

I'm not sure that will be the case with the ribbon CPUGuy.
Chris, the Paste button is one of those icons that has a drop-down menu, It offers the options of Paste, Paste Special..., and Paste as Hyperlink. |

bluvg, it appears the color may be configurable. There's a shot of a black theme here:

| n4cer--yes, I saw that also on Jenson Harris's blog (after I posted here). I like the black much better than the wimpy (IMO) blue, but I still prefer the flat-gray-w/gradient of the original Beta 1 screenshots. Hopefully that will be an option as well. I also hope they are consistent with the anti-aliasing and do it for the rounded corners, if it's not a big deal. I'm not sold on the "Office Knob," though--it's sort of hard to tell that it's even a button, and I can imagine this would be fun to explain for the help desk. It goes against discoverability--which I'm not totally sold on since I think it sometimes lends itself to clutter, but in this case I think they will take some criticism. |

| Yes - I actually noticed that about the paste button after I posted that comment - so I'll forgive MS a little on that one - but still - my point about the triple sized icon remains. |

I was just about to post a link to Jensen's blog :-)
I prefer beta 1 over the blue as well, but the black is pretty cool. Hopefully, they'll tone down the bright portions and maybe add some more variations of colors in a theme for different UI parts that help highlight each functional set. Overall, I like the design, but hope the defaults are pleasent. Also nice that it seems they'll be supporting client area glass in Vista. I really like the new UI and I appaud MS for taking a risk like this with one of their biggest products and actually breaking new innovative ground etc - but on the other hand protect my valuable screen real estate ferociously - so I question the need for some icons to be as large as they are and on top of that have the text below it as well...

chrishedlund--you may want to take a look at this regarding real estate in 2007:
http://blogs.msdn.com/jensenh/archive/2006/02/17/534099.aspx Surprisingly, in the default, out-of-the-box configuration, the ribbon actually uses less space than the toolbars of 2000 or 2003. Also, you can toggle the ribbon off by double-clicking on the selected tab (I think Ctrl+F1 may be the keystroke for this, but I would have to look that up). |
