Microsoft Corp. is considering bundling in the next version of Windows a pared-down version of its next-generation SQL Server database and the relational file system that goes with it. Microsoft executives have been briefing the company's largest corporate clients and partners about their plans for the next version of Windows, code-named Longhorn, and have included mention of a new SQL-based file system, sources said. That would require a SQL engine. | ||

#1 - Microsoft isn't talking about simply including SQL Server (or any derivative, like JET or MSDE) in Windows, they are talking about replacing the filesystem with it.
Currently, Win9x uses FAT/FAT32, Windows NT/2000/XP use NTFS/NTFS2/NTFS3. This would replace NTFS with a database like filesystem that would use SQL-style syntax to query for files, folders, etc. There are *many* benefits to using a database as a filesystem, and books have been written on the subject. Among these benefits, the key ones are typically referred to as TRC, which stands for Transactions, Recoverability, and Concurrency. MySQL is a steaming POS. If you want something free and open source, use Postgres. PLEASE! |

Binhex, actually, in WindowsXP, if you have a shortcut, and then you move the application to another path, when you try to launch it from the shortcut, Windows does a search for the app (about 2 secs), and then fixes the shortcut.
Many of the advantages of using a relational database as a FS has come through in BeOS's own Be File System... unfortunatly, we all know what has happened to Be Inc. |
