Netscape's civil lawsuit against Microsoft is a vote of no confidence in the government's handling of the case and a competitive attempt to influence the outcome of the larger antitrust trial, say analysts and legal experts. Netscape, which AOL Time Warner acquired in 1999, filed the civil suit in federal court here Tuesday. The company is seeking unspecified damages, which could be tripled later on, and a jury trial. Netscape also is asking the court to impose a preliminary injunction against Microsoft that could compel the company to sell a version of Windows without some or all of the "middleware" components, such as the Web browser, media player or instant messenger. | ||

Neb, ya like quotes? How 'bout:

Actually, it's not silly at all (it's Federal law) but out of context, but I guess you didn't figure that out. It states that MS is a monopoly in the OS market therefore innovation, competing, pricing, can't dislodge it from that monopoly. I used it out of context because the argument "build a better product" is inherently idiotic if you're declared a monopoly using monopoly power. In other words, they're a monopoly exactly because of the fact that better products can't compete.
Are you suggesting Netscape was a monopoly? Are you suggesting NS did anythign anti-competitive? No? I didn't think so. |

| Soda, they are a monopoly because there really is not an alternative OS that is readily available and as easy to use. If there really is no competition it is hard not to be a monopoly. Now I am not saying they are right, but until there is a viable alternative, then they will remain a monopoly. By breaking them up or making them open source IE is in no way going to end the monopoly. They will just create two if they are broken up. The competition just can't keep up. And I prefer to have an updated OS that gets better as it goes on, MS provides this and this is why they are a monopoly. All this BS DOJ Antitrust crap is doing is delaying the inevitable. They will not lose, no matter what happens. I have said it before and I will say it again, if MS just closes there doors and runs with the money they have made, then where will we all be. Waiting around for someone to catch up that is where. Also this crap is just further wasting my tax paying dolars, and I as a tax payer am getting quite sick of it. Things are not going to change no matter how much they get sued. And I know that is the worst way to look at it, but it is the truth. Just look at how long this has been going on, they have the money to keep it going. |
