How the Windows XP Experience, and New Companion Products, Have Changed Home Computing
Time: 08:42 EST/13:42 GMT | News Source: PR Newswire | Posted By: Byron Hinson

The world has moved into a new year, and it is more apparent than ever how technology has changed the way we work and live. Microsoft has always been at the forefront of bringing technological innovation into the home, and Windows XP is no exception. Since hitting the shelves October 2001, Windows XP has delivered exciting new capabilities that have allowed users to have more fun with their personal computers. Additionally, other software companies are now offering exciting companion products that make the home-computing experience more enjoyable, more relevant and more secure for the whole family. Together with Windows XP, these new products are enabling computer users to do more with their home computers than most ever thought possible.

If XP integrated full-blown CD burning features comparable to or better than those offered in third party products, people would complain that Microsoft was trying to kill of the third party CD burning software market, and Microsoft would increase their chances of being sued by some or all of the third party CD burning software makers.

Built-in CD burning or Windows Movie Maker, etc. are there simply to spur the interest of the average user who may not be aware what their PC is capable of. This can increase sales in third party products or increase adoption of peripherals such as digital cameras for instance.

#1 - your post is a little suspect after reading it for a few minutes. your feelings may be true, but the average consumer isn't as "smart" as you. XP has made all the os features alot easier for people like my mother and grandpa(i know someone's gonna make a smartass comment on that) it's all about dumbifying the experience and making it more user friendly, which they have successfully accomplished.

p.s. since when is blue, silver and olive considered neon?

Well for me remote assistance is great. My parents live 3 and a half hours away and I can't always take that much time to go fix their computer problem. With remote assistance its just like I was there.

Very cool feature and very welcome.

And this is innovation. Nobody else is doing this.

#1 is right on target...

The ONLY thing I have gotten out of WinXP is I don't need to dual boot Win2K/98 any more.

Many of my simulators would not run under 2K, so I always had to have that blasted Win98 partition hanging around.

While there still a couple that will not run under XP, it's down to where the one's that won't don't matter anymore.

Other than that, XP is overloaded with junk that is half-butted in functionality or simply extends Microsofts control over the computer and computing experience.

Stability is no better than Win2K IMHO, and we could ALL do without the hassels of WPA.

I'm moving as much work as I can to MacOS X shortly. I'll always need and support both platforms, but the more time I can spend on OS X the better.

Why post these silly PR pieces and tech notes that have been sitting on the MS site for months, which get zero or little comment? Could it have anything to do with AW's desire to bump unfavorable discussions off the page?

"Well, I wouldn't want to go so far as to suggest..."

Well, for now anyway, the Netscape vs. Microsoft remains.... Will it be around tomorrow?

Nice try #18.

Bob, in some respects, just a joke, but I do notice that when there is an active, controversial thread in the middle of a day of posts, you can almost guarantee the next day there will be 15 pieces of PR and tech notes completely pushing the interesting article off the page... meanwhile that day goes by with very little posting because people don't care about MS's PR. Just an observation. Maybe a coincidence. I'm not suggesting anything.

But, hey, I love the site, and the way you all run it.

Well, I tell you one thing MS never sends us anything to post. We don't intentionally have the news go to the bottom, but what happens when we add news throughout the day. We usually keep two days set up at all times so the threads can last, and if we keep more than two days up the page is over 250k which kills our bandwidth. So we are looking for ways for easier access to past days, etc. We post good MS news and bad MS news. No bias. Also, those tech articles are pretty popular. Even though they do not have any comments, they received 6x the amount of hits this story does. Just because there are no comments doesn't mean it's not popular. Thanks for your comment :)

I presumed much of what you say about the site and took that all for granted, Bob, and take your word for it. I was kinda joking and just keeping your feet to the flame. And I wasn't suggesting that the PR comes from MS; it just seems odd and even annoying that 8 uninteresting posts will be made almost at the same time when at the same time there are 2 or 3 interesting and controversial stories out there floating around. Do you guys only post stories that are sent in? If so, I don't fault you for that, but you miss some pretty big stories occasionally that are easy to find on the big sites (i.e. yahoo news, news.com, the register, eWeek, infoworld, etc...) and I wonder sometimes why they don't make it to AW (for example, the story today that MS and the DOJ are being sued for not complyng with the Tunney Act).

I suppose a well read article is a good one, but I thought the functionality and purpose of this site was really to have discussions. I'd also wonder if you are getting click throughs because people are saying, "What does this say exactly that no one has anything to say about it?"

Just a theory. Keep cooking. ;-)

Most people have already bought into the software as a service idea. Anyone running commercial antivirus software already pays a fee for updates. And some online gaming services charge subscription fees. An MSDN (Microsoft Developers Network) subscription is also an example of software as a service.

#14 By 3339 (206.216.3.134) at 1/23/2002 9:57:29 PM
Right, Enforcer, but what if you had no choice, and what if the software wasn't dependent on updates but actually WORKED in the first place?

If MS does switch over to services entirely without providing the option to buy software... well, I predict that could be the next antitrust lawsuit.

Either that, or determining they are also a monopoly in the browser market and are using it to leverage the services market.

These are just theories, but trust me... of course, I guess I've already got a pretty mistrusted, dispicable rep here... oh well. But just so you know, I'm predicting it now; the big question for me is if it'll happen after this one is already finished or if MS is going to be able to lap themselves.

#15 By 2459 (66.25.124.8) at 1/23/2002 10:51:22 PM
Sodajerk,

There will be a choice. If anything, .NET will level the playing field a bit as Microsoft isn't the only place to go for the .NET platform for building applications or the software as a service initiative. Other implementations are in developement, and standard .NET apps will be cross-platform.

Besides this, there are choices other than Microsoft currently. The most credible alternative to the Windows platform is the Mac. And even if Microsoft were to one day offer no boxed products, this doesn't mean that everyone would no longer offer boxed products. Some items simply would not work as well as a service, and Microsoft would have to offer boxed products for some software until more people had better internet connections.

Also, there are many benefits to the platform and service model such as being able to access information at any time from anywhere on almost any device, or using more powerful devices to increase the usability of lower-powered devices (e.g., an XP PC wirelessly connected to a PocketPC or Mira screen, or a server providing speech recognition capabilities to underpowered devices). Location-specific information like that which will be provided by MapPoint.net or Carpoint.net is also a plus. I think there are many benefits which outweigh the possible negatives, and because of direct distribution, software as a service could prove more economical than the current model. And if the programming platform and the services model are given a chance, it could bring us closer to the Star Trek-like world of ubiquitous computing (except without all the sparks and fires that arise whenever there is a problem with the computers :-) ).
