Gates vs. Jobs: who is the good guy? | |

If you had to pick the lesser of two evils, which one would you choose: Bill Gates or Steve Jobs? From looking at my fellow Arsians' opinions, I would wager a guess that most would pick Gates as the worse alternative. Seems logical, right? Gates = Microsoft, Windows, security problems, bad haircut. Jobs = Apple, iPod, sleek hardware, black turtleneck. But what about a different approach to answering that question? Using altruistic impact as the measuring stick, it looks like Gates is more interested in changing the world for the better. In contrast, Jobs seems to be all about the Benjamins. | ||

| If one thinks Apple would behave differently if they were in the dominant position, one needs to look no further than the iTunes music service and iPod. I don't begrudge them that, but they are hardly a model of open and competitive business practices. It is no different than the things that Apple fans have alleged about Microsoft over the years. |

Oh, c'mon, you really think it's not a closed system? They recently won second place in Newsweek's "This Won't Work With That" awards, just behind AIM.
BTW, you're full of baloney about the Thinkpads going downhill after Lenovo took them over. We recently received the X41 Tablet PC, and they're just like every other Thinkpad I've tried (very high quality, although I think they're overpriced). They have about 20,000 former IBM employees (from their PC division), and the Thinkpads were already made in China for the past 10 years. In the case of the X41--which is a very fine machine indeed (compared to all the laptops I've tried, the balance of performance vs. weight and handling vs. battery life is unrivaled)--it was initially designed by IBM anyhow. If they had a solid discrete graphics card offering, this would be one killer machine. |
