AOL Time Warner apparently is not making a bid to buy Linux manufacturer Red Hat, said sources familiar with the matter. On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that the media giant was near to cutting a deal with Red Hat in a competitive strike against Microsoft. Sources familiar with the situation emphatically insisted the two companies are not near an acquisition deal, nor have they discussed one. An AOL Time Warner spokeswoman, as a matter of company policy, would not discuss the merger rumor, and Durham, N.C.-based Red Hat could not be reached for comment because of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. A Microsoft spokesman also declined to comment.

Notice the Media Metrix numbers that spurred quite an interesting debate last week? Well, since now we know the true numbers, that MSN "stole" half of their search hits, can we now agree that this is a scam and another abuse of monoply power to influence another market?
No? Well, I didn't expect any converts, but I'll await the silliness to come from RMD or soda or Jagged.

IntelliMoo, I think it's more likely the Post was wrong, and the suppositions made by CNET are more accurate... at least more logical and definitely more powerful. That is AOL license the RH distro in a tidy little joint venture. That'll give AOL the OS and an application platform, and Red Hat gets the distribution of AOL.

All sorts of conversations could be going on, and it would be the Post making the PRESUMPTION that it's a merger talk. On the other hand, even if AOL and Red Hat won't discuss it, when "sources familiar with the matter" flat out deny it: saying that there is no acquisition agreement nor have their been talks of merger, there is quite a bit of weight to such a denial. Again, I think it's more likely that a strategic partnership happens as CNET outlines then a buy out.

An acquisition of RedHat simply makes no sense. I agree that it makes more sense for them to be talking with RedHat to do something for them.
Redhat simply isn't a good acquisition target. While the company is certainly seeing declining revenue stream, and has yet to post a profit with no prospect of this changing in the future. So even though it's not a growing company, the stock price is still far in excess of the companies actual value making it a very unattractive acquisition.
For less than 1/5th the cost, AOL could have picked up Corel before they sold off their Linux stake. They would have gotten the Linux knowledge as well as numerous valuable pieces of commercial software that could be leveraged.
Or for even 1/4th the price of Corel, they could buy Caldera.
A Redhat acquisition simply doesn't make sense. I fully suspect this rumor was started by Linux folks engaging in wishful thinking. "Look, we are still relevant!"

what's wrong, Trade? Don't know how to read? I can't really answer a question like, "Huh?", but if you can manage to form a question, I'll gladly answer it.

"I don't even care about half the issues you seem to involve me in with your technical postings"
Me neither
"I actually find it kind of funny that you think I'm supposed to respond with some serious post that I'm going to forget about in an hour anyway."
What makes you think that I expect you to respond to anything I say. I said I expected on of you might have something silly to say; I didn't say, "All three of you better respond because I'm cool!"
"While sodablue and RMD may think you're someone who may actually listen to their posts in a reasonable way, and not act in a cynical manner towards them, I don't."
I would wholely expect anyone to view my posts as 100% cynical. Isn't that obvious? However, I think you have a different definition of cynical, since, in no way, does cynical have to conflict with reasonable.
"It looks to me like you think you're the guy in the right here, fighting off a bunch of ignorant idiots (hence the overbearing "Don't know how to read? Line up in front of me and watch me answer all your questions for you" attitude)."
Actually, I very frequently think I'm wrong. I provoke people sometimes to find out how and why I am wrong. I feel I have to be provocative to get to the point where there is actually a CONVERSATION that is intelligent, but that's different. Frequently, no discussion occurs if I don't say something provocative. And, yes, I am tired off and dismissive (even insulting) of the typical softie responses (i.e., AOL's a monopoly too, so is Apple, Linux sucks, McNealy wishes he was Gates, really pathetic car analogies, etc.. -- specifically, look at RMD's assertion that AOL + Red Hat would negate MS's monopoly)
"As you know, I'm not even 18 yet. If you think I have the time or energy to waste trying to convince a cynical and overbearing ass who expects everyone to take him seriously although his name is a blatant mockery of someone else's, you have another thought coming. I can post seriously, but I don't think it'll be received well in cases like this. "
Whatever. You seem to place a lot of importance on your age. Personally I don't care what you think of me, and I don't think of you.

Wow... I'm flattered. People are talkin' about me, and I'm not even here!
#1 - Funny, last time I checked, I don't believe you have actually rebutted any of my posts. Surely my silliness can be easily refuted!

Sodablue and Sodajerk, this rivalry of useless and inane comments is sickening. I have noticed that Sodablue is intelligent to some degree, but please give it a rest with the pointless comments. I come here to read and debate technology and MS not who's winning in the posts.
