PC virus celebrates 20th birthday | |

January 19th is the 20th anniversary for the appearance of the first PC virus. Brain, a boot sector virus, was let loose in January 1986. Brain spread via infected floppy disks and was a relatively innocuous nuisance in contrast with modern Trojan, rootkits and other malware. The appearance of the first Windows malware nonetheless set in train a chain of events that led up to today's computer virus landscape. | ||

Actually, the first personal computer virus's appeared on the Apple II in 1981:
http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0872842.html Apple Viruses 1, 2, and 3 are some of the first viruses “in the wild,” or in the public domain. Found on the Apple II operating system, the viruses spread through Texas A&M via pirated computer games. |

| Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer_Virus) state that the first "in the wild" virus was Elk Cloner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elk_Cloner) which was written in 1982. The first x86 virus was Brain which was written in 1986. Interestingly enough, both viruses were created to try and create enough annoyance on the end user to stop them from pirating software! In any case, happy 20th, 24th and 25th birthday to all those viruses! |

"Written in 1982 by Rich Skrenta, it attached itself to the Apple DOS 3.3 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_DOS) operating system and spread by floppy disk." As I said, first personal computer virus was for the Apple. |

| #5 I know, that's why i stated in my second sentence that the first x86 virus was Brain to point out that the article treats the term 'PC' to mean IBM-Compatible rather than personal computer. If those dates are correct then it's the 24th Birthday of the first PC virus, not 20th. |
