During its first-ever appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2006 (see my show report), Internet search giant Google unveiled two initiatives, both of which are aimed, in part, to counter Microsoft, the company it considers a primary competitor. The first is called the Google Video Store: Users of this service will be able to buy and rent a wide range of video content online, including prime-time and classic TV shows from CBS, NBA games from this season and the past, Sony BMG music videos, and news and historical content from ITN. The second initiative, and the focus of this review, is Google Pack. Google describes Google Pack as a free collection of safe, useful software from Google and other companies that improves the user experience online and on the [Windows] desktop. | ||

Acrobat Reader 7... gosh, aren't we due for version 8? It's been more than the usual couple months between version increments, Adobe, c'mon.
I understand Paul's thoughts on IE vs. Firefox (I use both about 50/50; there are things I like about both, but prefer Firefox overall at this point), but he is becoming unjustifiably harsh towards IE. In particular, I take issue with this: "...if [Firefox] should crash--and it won't--then it won't take down the entire Windows shell with it." That's simply not true--Firefox can and does crash (I'm up to date, but it crashes nearly every time whenever I log in via Remote Desktop, as one example). And I've never had IE "take down the entire Windows shell with it"--it's a separate process, for crying out loud. If IE hangs, kill IEXPLORE.EXE. Hmmm, Explorer.exe is still running, the desktop is still responding. Paul should know better than to say something so misleading. He is totally right about two things, though, in my opinion--NAV is a blight on any system, and there is a need for a reality check for the current Google craze, which this offering provides. I kind of wonder if Google had intended to introduce something else at CES, but couldn't get it ready in time and instead threw this together. |

| Paul isn't exactly a neutral source -- heck, he's a downright poster boy for biased reporting. But he's right. I am a Google fan and Google Pack is a big letdown, at least as disappointing as other recent bombs (e.g., Google Talk, Google Base, and Personalized Home). It seems other than search, email, maps, and Picasa, Google is struggling to produce another hit. |
