MS Windows Update suffers multi-day outage | |

Microsoft's Windows Update site has been experiencing severe problems in the past week, and numerous users have been unable to access the site. According to several people who've contacted The Register, problems began on Thursday and carried on through Friday. Over the weekend it does seem to have been possible to access the site, but they report that it was unreliable. At the moment, however, it seems to have gone off again. Three attempts by The Register to download critical updates for a Windows 2000 machine resulted in an attempt to start the download, then an apparent timeout followed by a blank "the following updates were not installed" message. As indeed they were not. | ||

ISP services in Britain are not known for their reliability, just their high cost. Might just be The Register can't connect. :)

Windows update isn't just 1 server. When you resolve windowsupdate.microsoft.com you get various round robin DNS servers responsible for the domain, each of which resolves it to a different IP address to do load balancing.
If one or more of the servers goes down, there is a chance a person resolving the IP will get errors or fail to connect, when at the same time others get through just fine. It is also possible that your computer continues to use the first IP that is resolved (in-fact, likely) and therefore it would appear to be down no matter how many times you try. One way to fix this is by killing your DNS cache. There are many ways to do this, so consult your documentation / network admin. :-) |
