Microsoft is truly Gulliver in the land of Technology Lilliput, and some figures released late in December from New York-based Jupiter Media Metrix indicate just how high the giant towers. Figures the company provided for November 2001 show that almost 88.3 million people in the United States got on the Internet - and Microsoft's Internet Explorer reached 74.2 percent. If you add the 4.7 percent who used MSN Explorer, the number climbs to 78.9 percent. | ||

It's not dead, but it is certainly an example against the use of Open Source for complex projects.
Still it's good that there is some competition out there, and it is good that Netscape finally has a browser which is standards compliant. The unfortunate thing is that most people who still are convinced they want to use Netscape think the version 6.x is buggier than version 4.x. Then they whine because a lot of web pages don't work right. |

I (hope I) am well known on this board as someone who believes that Microsoft has some excellent solutions.
However I find it amusing that on the one hand, Microsoft's marketing arm boasts about market share as proof of the effectiveness of their software solutions, and their legal arm clams they have significant competition in the same spaces. Of course, now that I think about it, they don't "boast" about having a large market share in OS's...they don't have to. They already control the space. They only bother to boast of market share when they think they need it to market their product effectively in a competitive market. So it all fits together... |

This is more like a "the sky is blue" article to me.
And #4... The browser is already there in alot of respects. But don't underestimate the importance of the browser. Many would argue with you and say that soon there will only be the browser. |
