Hundreds of people who bought Microsoft’s hot new Xbox game console over the holidays received defective systems, and some say they waited for weeks before the devices were fixed. Analysts said the number of flawed consoles is probably too small to spell serious production troubles, but said long repair times wouldn’t help the software giant in its first major foray into hardware. John Kreis, 31, of Chicago bought an Xbox the day it came out. He said the $300 system stopped working almost immediately, but it took a month of aggravation with Xbox customer service before he got a replacement.
The stakes are high for Microsoft, which shipped about 1.5 million Xboxes over the holidays. With the highly regarded Xbox, the company is battling Nintendo and Sony in a hyper-competitive game console market. Microsoft delayed its U.S. launch date by a week to Nov. 15 amid rumors of problems at its Mexican production plant. It also pushed back its Japan launch date, but has denied any major problems. Microsoft sales and marketing director John O’Rourke said fewer than 1 percent of the consoles have proven faulty. Analysts say that’s in line with the industry standard, and competitor Nintendo reported a comparable rate for its new GameCube.

The press are intent on letting this get out of hand - the 1% defective rate is exactly the same as ALL other consoles.

The XBox brings something new to Microsoft's table that they may not be ready for.
Customer Service!
They are not used to providing customer service, and now that they have released a commodity product, they are going to have to learn quick or they won't be a player.

Whaa? I've encountered few companies with customer service as good as Microsoft's. From the KB, to Technet, to free online support, to what used to be free phone support (*cough*... oh well), Microsoft has always been great for both small and large customers alike.
For instance. I bought a new Intellimouse Explorer Wireless. It made a HORRIBLE sound that only I could hear (stupid good ears)... I submitted a problem report on the free customer support web site, and within a week I had a new mouse arrive at my door. They didn't even ask for the old one back.
This isn't an isolated incendent either. Now that Windows XP has that support page stuff which lets you contact an MS rep who can remote assist your machine, it seems clear that Microsoft is great in the support arena.

#5, and #6, you are both idiots.
#5, you are guilty of that which you acuse us of.
We are not defending MS, we're just pointing out of the obvious, which is that the press has some crusade against MS and they are intent of making a mountain of any molehill which affects every other company.
Every company which has ever shipped a console has had at LEAST 1% defect rate. At LEAST. The PS2 had huge problems when it first came out, hell, there was even a recall on some or most! That was a HUGE disaster, but it only ever made one or two headlines.
This MS thing is a normal occurance with any company which makes Consoles (or ANY product, for that matter!) yet the press would have us believe that every XBox is completely and horribly broken. Ask yourself, why is that?
The simple fact is that every product is designed and made by humans, so it will have failure rates. 1% failure rate for any product is considered very good. Automobiles have horrible failure rates, yet you don't see MSNBC foaming at the mouth about GM.
So, pull your head from the sand and open your eyes. There's a whole world of truth out here!

The people on this board that point out problems with other companies' products are not blindly defending Microsoft. They are just pointing out that whatever problems Microsoft has had with XBOX or basically any of their other products are not unusual for the industry/industries in which they compete. It is well known that the media will take the smallest problem Microsoft is having and blow it out of proportion while simultaneously overlooking similar (or more severe) problems of other companies. Microsoft is often singled out because of their size and because most media outlets think the story will get them more sells or hits. I've seen plenty of articles where the headline or the article, itself, makes it appear that Microsoft is at fault in some way even if MS doesn't have anything to do with the matter at all. They just mention Microsoft just to be mentioning Microsoft. It is often like MS is the star that, despite the circumstances, gets constantly abused by the tabloids simply because it sells. Most of the regulars on this board are simply seeking balance to an often one-sided or (in some cases) completely fabricated story.

Interesting. It's nice to see the anti-MS contingent has managed to turn this into another flame war.
Do have to agree with RMD, Microsoft's support is easily the best in the industry today.

#21 - I'm in no way offended by the MSNBC article (actually it was taken from an associated press article), and I never said that Microsoft was infallible, or that MSNBC was out to "get" Microsoft. However, since the defect ratio for the XBOX is normal for videogame consoles, why was this event even newsworthy?
The AP article is not even-handed. If you want to write an article on videogame console defects, why single out the XBOX in the headline? The headline they used would make it seem, at a glance, that there is a big problem unique to XBOX, and mention of other console-makers having similar defect ratios was conveyed in just one sentence.
MSNBC is no stranger to publishing ZD/Cnet style articles that blast Microsoft with little cause. Even with the MS affiliation, few articles on MSNBC are totally Pro-Microsoft. I'm not saying that every article about MS that is output by ZD/Cnet, or whomever, is a bad article, but it is true that there are stories which mention and/or bash MS simply because it attracts readers.
As for religion, can you get any more religious than anti-ms followers that frequent MS-related areas just to convert Windows users, bash MS or start flame wars because they think they are cool (I am not referring to you, #21. As in my other posts, I'm speaking in general.)? Some of them are hypocrits, but you find those in most religious groups :). From what I have seen, Windows users are more apt to try other platforms, or at least, respect the users of other platforms when unprovoked. I, myself, have used DOS/Windows, OS/2, MacOS, FreeBSD, BeOS, Linux, and probably some other OSes I can't currently recall. Of those, I like Windows and MacOS most. I have read many articles linked to this site basically since it opened, but only started commenting late last year. I don't post here to blindly defend Microsoft. I do post to comment on content I read (this is a comment section), help someone in need, offer my opinion, or to sometimes refute unsubstantiated claims of other commenters (and the occasional troll) with factual evidence contrary to their claims.

The only thing I disagree with in the story is the title - its not really a story about the defective units all consoles have - its about poor customer service when people complain about their problem.

#27 - Hmm, but then that is because you are blinded by your anti-MS obsession. The flamewar erupted from posts #5 and #6.
