Tech Analysis: If it were possible to remake Windows with a magic, Windows-morphing wand, standards support and sensible security would be part of the imaginary makeover. As part of our issuewide reflection on the Windows that Microsoft has produced during the past 20 years, we thought it'd be interesting to consider the Windows we wish we had as well. If we had a magic, Windows-morphing wand, here's how we'd wave it to remake Windows. Along with managing hardware, which Windows does pretty well, the primary jobs of an operating system are to run applications—a task that Windows performs perhaps too well—and to manage installation and updates of those applications—a duty that Windows doesn't handle nearly well enough. | ||

Nlite is pretty good and allows you to make a custom install with a lot of what your saying turned off by default. Also allows you to slipstream patches and hotfixes, programs etc. Give it a try and see if it will work for you.

Including a full featured option to select exactly which apps you want installed and which you do not! #4 "As far as things like file extensions are concerned"... they should be thrown out and replaced with MIME Types. |

How would you identify a particular file's MIME type? Consider that files can be stored anywhere, even on removable media. |

a) Use a filesystem that allows you to store the MIME content type (think BeOS, KDE, GNOME etc.); b) Use heuristics to look at both the extension and the content to verify that the .DOC file really is a Word Document and not an executable - the same way that Anti-Virus apps work, looking for signatures. This will solve your removable media issues. I didn't mean to completely remove file extensions but rather to stop relying on them when trying to decipher the contents of files. |

1) KDE/GNOME don't store the MIME type along with the file in the filesystem, despite what the Wikipedia article says. The general practice is to have a configuration database entry which maps MIME types to...extensions (only they call it patterns, as in *.txt). This is exactly what Windows does, except that the mapping in stored in the registry. 2) KDE does provide a standard way to "sniff" the MIME type based on content. This can be used by applications. I don't think the shell uses it by default. Exactly the same feature is provided by Internet Explorer under windows, and this is used by applications at their discretion. For instance, change the extension of a .wmv file to .mpg and try opening it in Windows Media Player. WMP will inform you that the file is the wrong type for the extension. The reason I am spending so much time on this topic is that it used to piss me off, too. So one day, I sat down and researched why it was so. As things stand today, if you care about accessing files from ANYWHERE, you cannot depend on anything other than the file itself for determining it's type. And in an application like the Windows Explorer Shell that deals with all types of files, and has to do so VERY fast, "sniffing" files to figure out their type is not practical in all cases. Still, it does happen (Explorer can differentiate between Word- or Excel-generated XML files today), so I guess we are getting there :-). |
