SideWinder Products Achieve Windows XP Certification | |

Microsoft SideWinder devices have just achieved the Microsoft Windows XP Certification. All the Microsoft SideWinder USB game controllers and their software (version 4.0) work with Windows XP. The following SideWinder products have all recently been tested and accredited as being fully Windows XP compatible:
Owners of the SideWinder game port devices have to know the SideWinder software (version 3.02) is designed to work with Microsoft Windows 95 or Windows 98. If you have Windows 2000 or Windows XP, the operating system includes device drivers for these game controllers listed above, so the device will function properly on both Windows 2000 and Windows XP. However, the accompanying SideWinder software (version 3.02 or any previous version) will not function, so you will not be able to create profiles for these devices using the SideWinder software on Windows 2000 or Windows XP. Microsoft is not planning to update the SideWinder software (version 3.02) for game port devices. | ||

This is so absolutely, TOTALLY BOGUS!
They magically 'certified' their existing products (and more interestingly, the 4.0 SideWinder Software) without changing a single bit of code? The same software that has been langquishing, in need of serious updating, for nearly two years? The SAME software that, when installed on Windows XP or 2K will COMPLAIN THAT IT IS NOT COMPATIBLE and may cause problems? So much for XP Certification and WHQL certification. It has just been proven to be worthless. Don't even get me started on what Microsoft has done to it's customers who spent hard-earned money on SideWinder Controllers, and were unlucky enough to have bought GamePort instead of USB versions. Microsoft and their Shenanigans with their SideWinder Devices is a real sour point with me. I've never seen such non-support for such expensive hardware. I'm not saying it isn't good stuff. I have several MS Force-Feedback Wheels and they are bullet-proof. EXCELLENT hardware. But the software (SideWinder) is a total joke and is ancient in design. TL |

There is NO upgrade path for V3.02/Gameport users. There never will be. Microsoft took their money, and laughed all the way to the bank. Even if you were able to 'obtain' it, Microsoft went to great pains to ensure that the version 4.0 software will NOT recognize any controller that did not ship in the box with it. That's right. There are actually MULTIPLE versions of 4.0. Each 'version' of 4.0 will only work explicitly with the device that it came in the box with. For example, if you have an MSFFW and a Force-Feedback 2 Joystick, you have to install the SideWinder 4.0 Software TWICE as each is hard-coded to the specific controller in the box. It's a real mess. How MS can get away with Certifying this without fixing it is beyond belief, and has degraded the whole XP Certification system to a sham. TL |
