When Microsoft Corp. releases its next Office productivity suite in the second half of next year, it will unleash the most dramatic Office upgrade IT managers have seen since Office 95. Code-named Office 12, the update doesn't just signify a departure from Office 2003 but also a radical change in the user interface and in the look that Microsoft has consistently offered for years to users of its Windows-based applications. | ||

| #2: of course it makes sense. In every Windows TCO study, one of the things they ALWAYS bring up is the retraining costs to retrain your users if you switch from Windows to Linux. Apparently it's a lot different double-clicking an icon on the desktop in Linux than it is in Windows. So it naturally follows that if you make large changes to the UI in Office, massive training costs will result. Or is this just a bogus piece of FUD in MS' TCO studies?? |

There is no question that there will be training costs. I never question that, I only questioned "expensive". More than likely, this will SAVE companies expenses. This new UI is "substantially" more productive because it's exposing the tools to the users. Allowing them to access their tools more quickly is more productive and cost efficient. Allowing them access to tools that they may never known existed is more productive and cost efficient.
So, let's be sure to explain that training costs can be, and will be, offset by a more productive UI/Environment. I alone learned more than twice what I knew in the past about Powerpoint once I received the Office 12 build. Instead of spreading FUD guys, how about you look at the entire picture. Of course, this doesn't JIVE with your Open Source fan boy agendas, so heaven forbid they allow a glimmer of positive from MS. You guys are as predictable as ever. |

What I would like to know is if Office 12 will be more _serviceable_.
The current office suite is a total mess installation and support wise. Hundreds of folders scattered all over the place. It's hard enough for us IT types. Users don't stand a chance. With the exception of spyware, no other ticket makes me cringe more than "Word crashes when launched" or something like that. They need to clean this mess up. TL |

I'm not an open-source fanboy (I find much of it a pain in the ass), but I tried OOo 2.0 for the first time today and you know what?
It ain't bad folks. If Office 2003 wasn't provided to me, I doubt I'd pay the huge money for it. I could easily get by with OOo 2.0. TL |

I don't think OOo 2.0 is bad (I played with the 2.0 beta for quite awhile). And I didn't think OOo 1.0 was bad either.
But both 1.0 and 2.0 are horrible with MS Office compatibility (read: formatting loss is really bad). |

What are you guys, Communists?!?!?! MS didn't innovate OOo, so it's total garbage and un-American. Besides, it's based on 27 year old Netscape code, so it's bound to format your hard disk the first chance it gets.

I'm going out as Latch on Halloween. I plan to wait outside peoples homes and find out which costume gets the most candy, then I'm going to make a bad copy of it and claim it is just as good, and then whine and snivel when I don't get any candy.
