  Warner Bros. Backs Blu-ray Disc
Time: 14:44 EST/19:44 GMT | News Source: The Register | Posted By: Byron Hinson

Film studio Warner Brothers yesterday announced plans to produce high-definition DVDs in the Blu-ray format backed by Sony as well as the rival HD DVD standard backed by Toshiba. The commitment to both camps by Warner follows a similar fence-sitting move by Paramount Home Entertainment three weeks ago. Universal Studios, the third studio that lined up to back the HD DVD format is also expected to follow suit. Marsha King, the executive vice president for new business development at Warner Home Video, said it wanted to make its movies available to as many consumers as possible. The studio is now satisfied that copy protection technologies included within Blu-ray will satisfy its requirements.

For once I hope sony wins out, Blu Ray is better technology than HD DVD despite the "cheaper" costs. If you want high definition you want the format that plays best and holds the largest capacity.

I think usability is more important than capacity, in this case. I'll be happy with blu-ray if HP gets their way... otherwise its too restricted.

#3 By 37 (207.118.181.206) at 10/21/2005 4:49:50 PM
If it's cheaper to produce (which may in turn make it cheaper for me), quicker to the market, has been properly tested, has the same quality as it's competitor, I will go with that. HD-DVD seems to be the one for me, as capacity is not an issue. Not to mention, both makers have already claimed greater capacity down the road.

#4 By 2960 (68.101.39.180) at 10/22/2005 12:49:27 PM
Well, everything I've read paints Blu-Ray as consumer hostile when it comes to DRM.

For that reason alone I'll take a capacity hit with HD-DVD.

ok, i'll admit that msft has drm on their minds from morning until night, but SERIOUSLY... I can not bring myself to trust SONY. Has anyone else noticed they are the MOST proprietary company on the entire planet? Have you ever owned a sony component system? The quality is there, but man oh man, are you gonna pay to extend your system. And the list of failed sony-backed formats is longer than I can list.

hd-dvd is my pick.

#4 "everything I've read paints Blu-Ray as consumer hostile when it comes to DRM."
I've only read Bill Gates say that - and I took that with a pinch of salt. Both formats are going to be consumer hostile as that is where things are going - consistently limiting what we can and cannot do with the products we purchase.

#5 "Has anyone else noticed they are the MOST proprietary company on the entire planet?"
See I knew it would happen eventually :) We finally agree on something. Having said that though, I'm with Byron on this - I want the largest capacity and HD-DVD, due to physical limitations, is not and will never be it. So not that I want to support Sony, but I want to move forward as much as possible not limp forward a little bit.

#7 By 37 (67.37.29.142) at 10/22/2005 11:40:22 PM
I don't know where you read your stuff Chris, but I read about this stuff daily. It's well known that blu-ray is implmenting not only more DRM features, but some of which is proprietary.

http://www.exisle.net/mb/lofiversion/index.php/t30259.html

"In an announcement last night, the Blu-ray Disc Association, led by Sony, representing one of two competing high-definition DVD formats, stated it will simultaneously embrace digital watermarking, programmable cryptography, and a self-destruct code for Blu-ray disc players."

"because Blu-ray appears to have developed its own approach--in some cases, proprietary--to each of these three technologies."

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,1845993,00.asp

"Both the competing Blu-Ray and HD-DVD formats will use the Advanced Access Content System, which was specifically designed for next-generation optical discs. However, the Blu-Ray group will also secure its discs with ROM Mark, a method to identify authentic Blu-Ray discs, as well as "BD+", which will serve to dynamically update the rights-management schemes in case workarounds or other cracks are discovered and exploited. "

However, I found this VERY interesting:

"The content protection system of HD DVD provides an equivalent level of security as the system advocated by Fox for Blu-ray," the statement said, released last Friday in response to the Fox announcement. "We also believe the Blu-ray disc format and proposed copy protection system may result in playability and reliability issues for the consumer."

Like I said, I think I will stick with HD-DVD.

#8 By 3 (62.253.128.15) at 10/23/2005 5:16:53 AM
I'm not saying HD-DVD doesn't have better parts to it, but weigh it up for most consumers and it'll go the way of betamax. It must be hard for Microsoft and Toshiba to see, but their press release a few weeks ago pushed some companies away from HD-DVD and into Blu-Ray.

#9 By 12071 (210.84.34.227) at 10/23/2005 7:53:47 AM
#7 It's not like to complain about proprietary technologies - or does that only apply to Microsoft-proprietary technologies? :)

I think we can both agree that both formats will use AACS - so far we're equal.
Bluray additionally includes "BD+" but HD-DVD supports it's own version of "BD+", e.g.

"The HD DVD format also uses the AACS specification and also supports renewability methods."
http://www.digitalhomemag.com/news/default.asp?pagetypeid=2&articleid=36972&subsectionid=1308

So we're back to being equal again. Lastly bluray includes ROM Mark - score 1 for bluray (or should that be -1 for the consumer?). In any case do you honestly see HD-DVD not coming out with their own ROM Mark given the tit-for-tat DRM fights that both camps have fought to try and win over the Hollywood studios? Are you saying that the whole basis for you picking HD-DVD is because it currently does not include a ROM Mark?

See this is what suprised me about Bill Gates' comments - I would have thought that he would be behind the format which offers the most DRM possible for two of reasons. One because Microsoft has had a dream of a DRM world for a long time now and two, because it makes sense to keep the studio's happy by giving them what they want, i.e. even more control. You yourself said that for Microsoft it's about Money 1st and Customers 2nd.

If we're going to discuss consumer rights then let's agree that we're doomed regardless of which format "wins" - we're going to be allowed to do less and less with the products we purchase. As I said - I'm no fan of Sony, I'm just a fan of capacity! If there was a 3rd format that offered 200GB per layer and they could make it available next year I'd be behind it! Note that I'm not factoring the time it will take to burn 200GB, or how much data you will now lose with a single scratch... but hey, 200GB per layer would be very cool :)

Kabuki boy brings up Rom Mark:

"The ROM Mark is a unique and undetectable identifier embedded in pre-recorded ROM media such as movies, music and games. While invisible to consumers, the ROM Mark can be mastered only with equipment available to licensed BD-ROM manufacturers. The Blu-ray Disc Association intends to ensure that only disks that contain the ROM Mark will be playable on Blu-ray systems, rendering piracy meaningless."

Can you make your own backup copy of a disc? Nope.

I vote HD-DVD.

"Microsoft has had a dream of a DRM world for a long time now "

Actually, Apple is the King of DRM. Microsoft dream is of a Media Center Hub that will allow you to record shows and music, play movies and music, and store movies and music that you purchase from Microsoft or any other company.

Apple, OTOH, wants you trapped in the Apple DRM world.

Microsoft knows that your chances of buying a Media Center PC are lower if you can't copy movies from the discs you buy onto 1TB arrays (cheaper every day) and us the MCE PC as a giant jukebox.

Thats why Microsoft wants managed copies. And HP is selling a lot of MCE PC's. So they want managed copy too.

43% of all PC's sold have MCE 2005 on them.

Apple of course will support the most restrictive form of DRM because Apple fanatics will still buy it.

Sure, Microsoft would love it if you bought all your movies and music through them, but if all you do is buy an MCE PC to store your stuff on, they still make money.

"for Microsoft it's about Money 1st and Customers 2nd"

Customers first if it makes them more money. The more useful and consumer friendly, the more MCE units will be sold.

has apple pledged support for bluray yet? thats when you know its doomed.

#10 "Kabuki boy brings up Rom Mark"
AWBrian brought up Rom Mark and already explained it. Have you still not figured out basic reading and comprehension skills? That's a rhetorical question, don't worry about answering it.

"only disks that contain the ROM Mark will be playable on Blu-ray systems, rendering piracy meaningless"
If I had a $1 for every time such words were spoken I'd be richer than your hero Bill Gates. Rom Mark type of protections have been developed in the past and successfully cracked every single time. This will do nothing to stop piracy. Having said that I thought you were anti-piracy and hence you should be pro any such methods to cut down on piracy! You don't have a case of double standards there do you Parkkker?

"Can you make your own backup copy of a disc? Nope."
Of course you will - just like you can currently make a backup copy of any protected disc you like using Alcohol.

"I vote HD-DVD."
I have nothing against HD-DVD, I just want more capacity! But please don't be suprised if (or rather when) HD-DVD introduces it's own Rom Mark. If the studio's want it badly enough it'll happen.

#11 "Customers first if it makes them more money."
That's still Money 1st as AWBrian has said.

It also makes BluRay meaningless. Why would anyone buy a machine that could not play stuff recorded on your own, such as home movies or last night's episode of Lost?
