Microsoft 'must support OpenDocument' | |

Microsoft will be forced to adopt the open file format or risk 'sliding into irrelevance', according to industry observers. Industry analysts and open source advocates believe that Microsoft will have no choice but to offer support for OpenDocument when more organisations start following the state of Massachusetts' lead. Earlier this week, a Microsoft executive said that it was not supporting the open file format due to the absence of interest from customers. At the same time, the company said it was adding support the PDF to Office 12 after receiving "over 120,000 requests a month" from customers. | ||

| .doc has served me quite well for 10 years, what do I need OpenDocument for? Yep, nothing. |

| Who cannot open a .doc file in the correct format? Even if you don't have Word or Works there is WordPerfect. Word even has a free viewer to view and print .doc so what is the big deal. The only reason that Mass is doing this is becuase they lost the court case. |

#2: It's not just about you. It's about serving the needs of every constituent in Mass.
#3: Those who don't run Windows perhaps? Even Word has problems opening up old Word docs. And a free Word viewer doesn't let you edit the document. |

Of course, the more forward thinking people saved themselves a lot of grief by saving their documents in RTF format, which is sufficiently open to allow just about any word processor on the market to read it.
RTF also gets around some security issues in the DOC format, such as DOC's propensity of not actually removing deleted test from the document, but rather just marking it hidden, so that viewing the file in a raw format could sometimes reveal text the author thougt had been deleted. So, to some extent, people have locked themselves into the DOC format voluntarily. |

| Latch, you aren't in Mass, if I recall, so it isn't about you at all. I was responding to #1 who thinks that his needs or wants are the same for everyone. My point is that .doc is perfect for me and OD gives me nothing I want or need, so he should speak for himself only. |

| Latch: The Word Viewer is unimportant. Windows users that do not have Word installed can still use WordPad to edit most Word docs, or OpenOffice Writer, both of which are free. |

The real consideration should be productivity. The storage format is irrelevant to most people. Will retraining all of Mass. emplyees to use some other office suite make them more or less productive, or will training costs and macro conversions chew up any percieved savings and also chew up hours and hours of lost productivity?
Considering that in most places they upgrade Office every 3 - 4 years, and it might cost them the equivalent of 10 hours wages per employee to pay for it (which works out to 2.5 hours) a year, switching to some crappy open source incompatible Office suite will be a big money loser for the state. |
