Eighteen months after I first heard that Microsoft would ship an "R2" (release 2) version of Windows Server 2003, that product is finally ready for primetime. Scaled back significantly from Microsoft's original plan, Windows Server 2003 R2 enters the world this fall in somewhat less impressive standing, stripped of the features that would have made it a true blockbuster. But fear not, Windows Server fans. R2 continues Microsoft's strong tradition of solid Server releases and is the first product release to embody the company's oft-stated goals of predictability for its customers. | ||

R2 is not an update to 2003 like SE was an update to 98.
R2 is a range of software to give what's already built into Windows more power. And yes, I'm sure you will have to pay for it. It encompases: AD Federated Services, AD App Mode, Distributed File Replication Service, NFS, Print Management Console , File Server Resource Manager, Sub-system for UNIX Applications / Identity Management for UNIX, Storage Manager for SANs, Windows Sharepoint Services SP2, and MMC 3.0. | I thought I heard that it's not a full install (like upgrading from 2000 to 2003), but don't quote me on that. If you have Software Assurance, then you've already paid for it. |

It comes on two disk:
Disk 1 - Windows Server 2003 SP1 Disk 2 - Windows Server 2003 R2 Technologies, which includes AD Federated Services, AD App Mode, Distributed File Replication Service, NFS, Print Management Console , File Server Resource Manager, Sub-system for UNIX Applications / Identity Management for UNIX, Storage Manager for SANs, Windows Sharepoint Services SP2, and MMC 3.0. |
