As early as May 1995, three months before Netscape Communications' initial public offering sparked the dot-com boom, Microsoft executives were worried that the nascent World Wide Web could one day become a significant threat to the Windows franchise. In an extensive memo called "The Web is the Next Platform" that was introduced as evidence in Microsoft's antitrust trial five years ago, Microsoft engineer Ben Slivka described a "nightmare" scenario for the software giant. "The Web...exists today as a collection of technologies that deliver some interesting solutions today, and will grow rapidly in the coming years into a full-fledged platform (underlined for emphasis in the original memo) that will rival--and even surpass--Microsoft's Windows," Slivka wrote. | ||

Just to insert some insight from 5 years ago.
An employee of mine's sister worked with the Microsoft Office Group at Microsoft. She had reported to him on numerous occasions that a major project w/i the Office Group was a hosted version of Microsoft Office. She explained that many of the "enhancements" to the DHTML model in IE were to support rich apps such as a online Word/Excel etc. While she wasn't clear just how far they had come at that point... it was obviously on the Office Group's radar to go hosted. Anyway I don't think that Microsoft a) Just now figured out that hosted solutions are super duper b) Microsoft ever starts pumping an initiative that hasn't been smoldering behind the seens for years. |

That's interesting, Mr. Humpty. That research that you mentioned likely went into Outlook Web Access (hosted mini versions of both Outlook and Word) and possibly also Hotmail.
I don't think that Microsoft has too much to worry about. There are a lot of issues with hosted apps such as stability and security. I believe most of their Office revenue comes from businesses, and businesses won't want to forego trusty installed applications and trust things to hosted apps (at least ones not from Microsoft). |

i for one agree with osprey that it is unlikely that hosted apps are likely to do away with desktop programs.
nevertheless, one can envision a scenario where one will only need one pc for such purposes, possibly at work, and otherwise use multiple other devices with any ol’ os with fast connections to that pc and the web to get stuff done. in that regard windows mobile may well become the most prescient thing ms has done in the last five years. |
