IE flaw puts Windows XP SP2 at risk | |

A flaw has been discovered in Microsoft's Internet Explorer that could launch a remote attack on systems running Windows XP with Service Pack 2, according to an advisory issued Thursday by security firm eEye Digital Security. The flaw, which also affects systems running Windows XP, is found in the default installations of IE, according to eEye's advisory. "The flaw is not wormable, but allows for the remote execution (of code) with some level of end-user intervention," said Mike Puterbaugh, eEye's senior director of product marketing. The discovery of this IE flaw comes just over a month after the software giant issued a cumulative patch addressing three vulnerabilities for IE. | ||

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the annoying SP2 popup-blocker "click-clack" that sounds every time it blocks a popup.
Every time I come to ActiveWin my dogs jump up, roll over, spin in circles and then beg for their reward. TL |

There are popups here? I use a well configured Firefox browser, so I didn't even know there were any popups on this site. Gee, I seem to miss out on a lot of stuff by not using IE. :-)

Please don't give me "..standards.." crap, 'cause I don't care: I am not a web developer. Now, I spend a lot of time on MSDN. Firefox just doesn't do the job *for me*. FF is good, it's just not for me due to the problems it has with MSDN. I prefer to use Netscape 8.x: it incorporates both FF and IE renering engines and switches between them automatically (or.. you can define which engine it should use on that and that site. One click to do that). I set it so that FF's engine (Gecko) is the default one and then Netscape will automatically switch to IE's engine when visiting sites such as MSDN, Microsoft.com, CodeProject.com, etc. Live long and prosper :) |

| I don't have a list of examples, but I've tried using firefox twice now since my friends seem to think its so great and had problems with multiple sites. No big suprise many of those same friends have since switched back to IE or are now trying Opera. |

Like pages that render correctly? Well, ActiveWin.com renders just fine, which was the site I was referring to. I also use it on the MSDN site, and have had very few problems there. Yes, the occasional MS only stuff gets mis-rendered, but I always have the option to use IE, which comes with every version of Windows in recent memory. I can as easily launch IE as I can Firefox when I know I am going to a site FF has problems with. The Netscape concept of having both rendering engines in it is a great idea. Both engines in one product. The only reason I stay away from Netscape is because it is owned by AOL, and I do not have much faith in them to keep up with security updates and the like on a timely basis, or to even support the latest Gecko engine. Their Gecko engine version is usually one or two behind Firefox. The most important rule of thumb is to check out the various browsers, and use the one that best suits your needs. If you spend most of your time at MSDN.microsoft.com or www.microsoft.com, then IE might be a better choice. If you explore the web in general most of the time, then Firefox, Netscape Navigator, or the Opera browser might be a better choice. |
