Microsoft Should Confuse the Market More | |

Back in January there were numerous news stories about how Microsoft Longhorn might be sold in as many as seven variations. The story died down, and I figured that the company wouldn't be so nutty as to confuse the market with so many variations on a theme. If they want to sell different kinds of tweaks, this can be better done as one grand distribution, with tweaks within the code that can be turned on and off during installation (or whenever). So the story cropped up again last weekend, with people saying there could be as many as seven versions of Microsoft Vista. The gossip sites have the seven as Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Small Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate. If there are going to be this many, Microsoft may as well go all the way and add a slew more. | ||

| I see your point, but if you include the N editions, then we have 4-7 more, right? And if you consider that all but Starter will have 32-bit and 64-bit editions, then we have nearly double THAT number. We could be looking at over 25 editions, by that measure. At least with XP Tablet and XP MCE, you knew it was simply XP Pro plus some extras (and a little bit of tweaking to Remote Desktop/Terminal Services on MCE). The real confusion was between Home and Pro, because it isn't obvious what the difference is, and there are home users that would want Pro. Home Basic, Home Premium, Pro, Small Business, Enterprise, Ultimate... I just don't think it's necessary. For example, if all that separates Enterprise from Pro is the VM stuff, then they should just bundle it with Pro in the first place (if they really want it to catch on), or continue to sell it separately. |

| The reason for the confusion is obvious. (wait that is an oxymoron; well this is MS) This way with several Editions they can avoid the government on the bundling issue. If there is a feature that you want we have an edition for that. If there is a feature you don't want we have an edition for you. And I'm sure the different price points will help them compete against Linux. Probably not the best way to go about it. What they should do is just have the Ultimate Disc that includes everything for the price of the Starter Disc. When you want new features you have to purchase or upgrade your key to unlock the next level of the OS that you need. That's the way they should do it from a business standpoint. I prefer that that they just give me the Ultimate Edition for the Price of the Starter Edition that's the way they should do it from a consumer standpoint. |
