Two days before the start of Professional Developers Conference (PDC) 2005, I've received exclusive insider information about the product editions, or SKUs, which Microsoft intends to create for Windows Vista (codenamed Longhorn). While the exact breakdown of the Windows Vista editions has been the subject of much speculation, this list closely matches the editions list I first published on the SuperSite for Windows last year. Here's how the Windows Vista product editions break down.

Can you imagine how the resellers are going to feel? Their inventory cost just went up by a factor of what, 4 or 5?

I disagree, and I think they're actually giving people what they really want; more options. Basically every group of customers has 2 editions to choice from. Also, in a screwy way, they've simplified the decision for consumers.
They've elliminated 4 editions by including Media Center and Tablet PC(both 32 and 64 bit). The Starter edition will basically be OEM-only for cheap entry-level systems. So, the choice for normal comsumers will be between Home Basic Edition or Home Premium Edition. The inclusion of support for home Active Directory domains is long over due and totally awesome! IT Pros, Developers, Geeks, and enthusiats have the most choices for at home use, which is perfectly acceptable. We ultimately represent the group of customers that are the hardest to please! Bu that's OK because we know enough to choose correctly, and will probably be drawn to the more advanced editions. So people like us will also have the ultimate edition, although I do wonder what they can add to REALLY make it worth it over the Professional or Enterprise Edition. They've expanded the business offerings to better meet the needs of small to medium business, and given enterprise a much needed choice between 2 editions. |

This is crazy..
I understand the need for a starter\basic edition. The rest is total crap. starter - reallly really basic home - standard stuff, basic networking pro - home + iis7, and some other development and corporate related features, GPO,etc. + ent\ultimate (1 other bullcrap version like ultimate or media.. or whatever..fine) That is more then enough to confuse the market. 9 versions is going to be a cluster fk... nine..and we're not even talking about server variants yet... jesus christ. |
