Microsoft's newest version of Windows, billed as the most secure ever, contains several serious flaws that allow hackers to steal or destroy a victim's data files across the Internet or implant rogue computer software. The company released a free fix Thursday. A Microsoft official acknowledged that the risk to consumers was unprecedented because the glitches allow hackers to seize control of all Windows XP operating system software without requiring a computer user to do anything except connect to the Internet. Microsoft made available on its Web site a free fix for both home and professional editions of Windows XP and forcefully urged consumers to install it immediately. The flaws, discovered five weeks ago by independent security researchers, threatened to undermine widespread adoption of Microsoft's latest Windows software, which many hope will be an economic catalyst for the sagging technology industry. | ||

MS01-54 was issued relating to Universal Plug & Play issued in early November. I suspect this one tipped off eEye to review other aspects of UPnP.
I'm a little bit confused by this because on every WinXP box I have this service is not installed by default. |

| OK #8 some may agree with you but this would be an OS level feature. This isn't like MediaPlayer or Messenger, this stuff is needed for universal plug and play stuff. This feature deserves to be in the OS irregardless of bundling or integrating. |

I dont see the big deal. The first exploit found in unniversal PnP was found right before xp launched. The fix was included in that oct 25 critical update patch. Anyone with any sense that was not on a network should have turned off/disabled the unniversal plug and play service - i did. All you do is double click on the service and select disabled. I dont see why microsoft made this service default, since if your not on a network it's worthless, but if you just turn it off your perfectly fine. The reason this doesn't effect win2k, is winme and winxp use NAT, am i not correct? Most of the ICS in winxp is from winme, not win2k. Also one thing ive seen no articles mention is by default winxp will notify and probably install critical updates for you. So for your average stupid user out there, they dont have to do anything to get patched, i believe.
Sure it's embarrasing for microsoft, but i dont have a problem turning off the service. What annoys me is this gives people that hate microsoft another excuse to say xp isnt secure. Xp is very secure, especially if you have all critical updates installed. -gosh |

#22 - That's certainly not the case here. There are many alternatives to Windows. Here is a brief list I found on the web, not in any specific order:

#26 The issue is, you chose the job, the college, the career, etc. If I buy an iPod then I need a Mac to interface with it. If my company uses BetaMax and I work at home, I'll need a Sony player at home to view vids. If your company did Hypercard, you'd have to have a Mac at home to do work there.
I imagine that you choose your career because you like programming. I imagine that you chose to code for Windows because a LOT of people use it (which gives the potential of making you more money). If this is the case, you are taking advantage of the market choosing Windows and I can't see why you are complaining about it. |

Is slashdot on RedHat's payrolls? Wait they are owned by VA (formerly VA Linux) so of course they are going to slam Windows as much as possible. ActiveWin doesn't report usually on unix crap. This site is not called *shudder* ActiveLinux chozzsun sorry.

As I've noticed, it is usually the Linux folks who attack Windows that starts the flames. Regardless, though, what else is this site good for? If you want real windows info, read the articles. If you want flames, read the posts. If you want help with windows related topics use Microsoft newsgroups, don't come here. |
