robinthomas - i've been wanting to do this for a long time myself, seeing as AIM and ICQ users have been able to do this for the past couple years, i think the api is also the opening for doing this...plz e-mail (joshjacob@hotmail.com) me if u figure out how to make it work!! :) This post was edited by Tegument on Thursday, December 20, 2001 at 22:00. |

Write it as two seperate components.
1st part - A simple dll that runs always on the server in the background logged in as your "dummy" user and has a public method for sending instant messages (eg: SendIM) to a user (specificed as a paramater). 2nd part - Some VBScript in an ASP page on your server (or similar) that accepts the users string and executes the "1st part's" SendIM method. If your worried about multiple messages being sent by different users at the same time, have your server app (1st part) maintain a queue. |

COM DLLs are ActiveX DLLs.
Visual Basic just refers to them as an "ActiveX DLL" in its project templates. You can write it in any language, calling it from a script would be the same no matter what language its written in, thats on of the points of COM. VB would be the language of choice simply because it is faster/easier to write this kind of app in VB that in C++ lets say. Although whatever your comfortable with is probably best. |
