Back on August 3rd, I installed the Beta 1 version of Windows Vista on my work desktop. That meant reinstalling all my applications...but I didn't have a copy of Microsoft Office handy. So I installed a beta copy of OpenOffice.org 2.0--the leading open-source office suite--figuring that it could serve as a stopgap. More than a month later, I'm still using that OpenOffice.org beta to do my everyday work...and it's been a remarkably smooth experience, especially considering that this is a pre-release product running on a pre-release operating system. | ||

| Good for him; I am an organized person so when I installed Vista I had my copy of Office 2003 handy; I installed and I am using it with no problems. I am Outlook dependant so until someone come out with a really valid alternative I will stay with MS Office. Btw IMO a fair comparison would be Beta against Beta so this guy should try Office 12 when it will be available. |

| We were a WordPerfect and Word shop for quite awhile, and I can say this about supposed "compatibility"--if it's not absolutely 100%, it might as well be 0%. You simply can't collaborate on documents effectively unless you're using the same program, and sometimes even the same version. The "$360" that you might save (over 3 years or so) by switching to OpenOffice would be quickly lost to a couple minutes here, a couple minutes there--per document--of cleanup work. Unless your company exists in a vacuum, it just isn't worth the few bucks in licensing costs. |
