As the battle for supremacy in the integrated development environment space more and more becomes a fight between just two camps, Microsoft Corp. better watch out, said one of the leaders from the competing camp. Eclipse is poised to overcome the Microsoft Visual Studio development environment as the premier environment for application development, claims Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, which oversees development of the Eclipse open-source development platform. | ||

| Linux was poised to over take Windows on the desktop in '99, '00, '01, '02...and that never happened. Eclipse doesn't hold a candle to Visual Studio .NET 2003 much less to Visual Studio 2005. |

Have you actually used Eclipse?!? I'm interested to know in which areas Eclipse doesn't hold a candle to VS - from my experience it "eclipses" it already in many areas. VS on it's own is a very poor RAD tool - it's not until you install Resharper that it's really nice to use. |

#6 I hate it when I have to install software on servers with utilities written in Java. I could go for coffee in between button clicks.
I just have to disagree with you. Native Windows apps are so much faster. |

| #6 When I said that VS was a poor RAD tool I was specifically referring to things like refactoring, live templates etc. VS 2005 starts to offer some of these features but for someone who has been "spoilt" by IntelliJ or Eclipse it's not even close! That's why I found that I had to get ReSharper for VS 2003 at work to be as productive as I am under Eclipse. So VS + ReSharper is a fantastic tool and I'd recommend it to anyone. |
