Linux More Bark Than Bite With Web Users, According to WebSideStory's StatMarket
Time: 09:55 EST/14:55 GMT | News Source: CNET | Posted By: Adrian Latinak

SAN DIEGO, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- WebSideStory, Inc. ( www.websidestory.com ), the world's leading provider of outsourced e-business intelligence services, today reported that despite much hype and expectation in recent years, Linux has failed to gain market share from Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) and Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) operating systems. As of December 17, 2001, Linux held a global usage share of only 0.24 percent, according to WebSideStory's StatMarket ( www.statmarket.com ), a Web development optimization service and the leading source for data on global Internet user trends. This compares with Microsoft's Windows and Apple's Macintosh operating systems, which hold a combined global usage share of more than 98 percent. For almost three years, Linux usage share has fluctuated between .2 and .3 percent, with no substantial growth. Usage share is the percentage of Internet surfers that are using a particular operating system.

#2: Please. Linux and user-friendly should never be used in the same sentence, unless seperated by a negative.

As for the story, is this news? In other news: Water is wet and fire is hot.

No kidding TL could you imagine a pack of rabid penguins???

*Shudder*

I know its a scary thought huh?

Development on Linux is definately a challenge. Like everything else on Linux, you either know everything or you're screwed. You better be a really good C programmer (not even C++) before you even think about developing anything on Linux.

As for Sun developing Java, well, they can keep it. .NET is far superior in every way. .NET is far more advanced than any other enterprise framework available today. J2EE has a long, long way to go to get to where .NET was at in Beta 1.

SodaLinux reminds me of those Penguins in the Batman Movie carrying the missle launchers on their backs.

LOL!

#6 - I have developed for both as far as web technologies go.

ASP is superior to PHP and CGI, it has faster development and more tools to use. JSP is a copy (as was Cold Fusion) of ASP and still cannot hit the performance of ASP. I've built sites in all languages and can tell you that ASP by far is the best.

ASP.NET took it to a new level and in all respects will own Java. Java's potential was never fully realized by Sun and was poorly executed. Java is dead in most respects though I still use it to write software for other OS's then Windows.

----------

I will admit that Linux has moved into the Corporate world but ONLY on servers and highly advanced workstations. I don't see it being adopted for much more than Servers. Even though everybody says "If you have a problem just change the source code" well companies can't afford to keep programmers like that on staff for their problems and if they do have them on staff they don't want them working out the bugs on an OS or writing custom software just so the company drones can work.

Can we get some real linux trolls up here again? I appreciate the effort soda but its just not the same.

Ok people, let's all make a pact to ignore SodaLinux from now on. :-)

Anyway...

#6 - "No joy? Funny, tell that to the web development teams that run Apache, or the CGI industry that now churn out quality movies every 2 years because of it."

Apache is a great web server, but that has little to do with development. There are few development tools for Linux (ala Visual Studio style) that facilitate productivity of any kind. On Linux, you almost always end up spending twice as long debugging as you do coding because you're forced to do old style System.Out.Write statements all over the place to figure out what's going on. That's usually not the case with Windows development because of the emphasis of graphic tools to aid in programming. Anybody who has ever seriously coded with Visual Studio (and similar products, few if any are available on Linux) will attest to how great IDE's with integrated graphical debugging are.

As far as creating movies, not sure what that has to do with Linux. There were countless quality movies created on SGI machines running NT too. The operating system and how cool a movie looks have little to do with each other, and much more to do with the quality of the software running on that OS.

"Try it before you degrade it."

I have and am. I've been running Linux since 1995. I just realize that it isn't the be all and end all of OS's. I consider a great OS for small servers and for interoperability testing - and that's exactly what I use it for.

"Oh yeah, M$ new technologies.. name one, C# not a new idea, Java.. yeah that was Sun's idea, C, nope, basic, nope, Directx? nope... kinda missing out here."

You do realize you crush you're own credibility by showing bias with that stupid M$.

Anyway, Microsoft never claimed to "invent" C, which was the brainchild of Bell labs. John Kemeny and Thomas Kurtz invented the original basic, and Microsoft has never claimed any different. Same goes for Java, although just like C and basic, Java borrows heavily from other languages - especially Smalltalk and C++.

DirectX is a Microsoft original set of low level (kinda) graphical APIs. They use many industry standard techniques for graphics rendering, but I don't know how you can claim it wasn't invented by Microsoft. Granted, up until perhaps DirectX 7, OpenGL was better... but that's another topic.

Continued on next post....

"I'll give it to MS though, their tools are pretty. Pretty expensive. Seen the cost of .Net yet, it's staggering. "

.Net yet? You mean Not Yet? Wow... I must be missing something since I've been writing applications for .NET beta 1, beta 2, and RC1 for over a year now. Also strange that I have the .NET Framework RC1 installed on my machine. That's some ghetto vaporware! Here is some proof (I guess). This is my user agent string for my browser:

“Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; Q312461; .NET CLR 1.0.2914)”

And what do you mean by cost? It costs nothing to develop .NET applications. The framework and command line compilers are 100% free - and they always will be. Visual Studio.NET costs money, but you can use notepad (aka: Linux style development) if you want.

You're probably referring to that wonderful (and typical) piece of misinformation spread by Slashdot a month or so ago purporting that it costs money to use the .NET Framework. Well, Slashdot, as usual, was either lying or simply ignorant. (Probably the later.) It costs money to utilize the .NET My Services, which are a set of services that Microsoft wrote using .NET, but have nothing to do with developing FOR .NET whatsoever.

As far as original Microsoft creations, it all depends on what you call original. You could say that COM was original, but it has its roots elsewhere as well. You could say that the NT kernel is original, and for the most part that's true. But it also has its roots elsewhere, mostly design principles borrowed from VMS.

But let me throw that back at ya. Name ONE innovation the Linux / Open Source community has ever produced. Ahh... a bit hypocritical to critisize Microsoft now isn't it?

#10 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 12/19/2001 4:13:14 PM
RedAvenger - Hey, I tried. It's hard to play the part of a Linux troll without busting up laughing, though. :)

#11 By 135 (209.180.28.6) at 12/19/2001 4:17:51 PM
RMD - You should ask your question more specifically. Like Name ONE innovation the Linux / GNU community has ever produced.

You can find numerous examples of interesting open source tools if you look at BSD and other licenses.

It's the GPL that exists primarily to copy others and doesn't really promote innovation.

#12 By 1845 (207.173.73.201) at 12/19/2001 4:46:07 PM
RMD,
Isn't that Beta2's version of the CLR? I thought you were running RC.

#13 By 1845 (207.173.73.201) at 12/19/2001 5:22:04 PM
#32 I can't seem to find a download page for the .NET FrameworkSDK at the moment (perhaps because it is soon soon to go gold). I can say that RMD is right, the framework sdk is free and it includes the command line compilers for C#, VB.NET and JScript.NET. If you create a desktop .NET project and create a setup project for it, the setup will include (along with the CLR and base class libraries) the above mentioned compilers.

#14 By 1845 (207.173.73.201) at 12/19/2001 5:24:59 PM
Oops, I mean #31. I found a dowload for beta 2 of the framework http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/code/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/000/976/msdncompositedoc.xml I don't think Microsoft made one available for RC.

#15 By 20 (168.215.253.242) at 12/19/2001 5:46:27 PM
.NET is a framework just like the Java framework. Java is free, so are compilers. Sun makes its money by licensing J2EE and by selling Java tools and IDEs.

Microsoft .NET is free, like I said. MS will make money by building applications on .NET and allowing better integration if you write your apps in .NET. .NET, like Internet Explorer is not a profit center, but allows easier development of applications which in turn generates more revenue.

Here's where to download the .NET Framework SDK (which includes compilers and debugging tools):

http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?url=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/msdn-files/027/000/976/msdncompositedoc.xml

The link on Slashdot was, as always, completely misrepresented.

The story referred to Microsoft's .NET MyServices which is an enterprise app built ON TOP OF .NET. MS will charge for this app, but .NET is free just like Java.

#23...

$1.3Million Pounds = $896,181

That is pretty sad as far as profits for a company doing what #36 said.

Seriously, if there are only a few partners in that company they are making pretty good money but as far as a public company with many shareholders... that is like buying them a Hersey's Kiss each :)

Anyway your post just proved the point you were trying to discredit.

#17 By 2332 (129.21.145.80) at 12/19/2001 9:04:31 PM
#30 - I am running RC1, but not on this particular machine. :-) RC1 is on my development server, and I just haven't gotten around to installing it on my workstation.

#31 - I believe that's been answered... see above.

#18 By 135 (208.50.201.48) at 12/19/2001 11:15:48 PM
That's a pretty tremendous loss in sales for a market that's supposed to be growing.

Looks like Gartner was correct and IDC is incorrectly reporting Linux marketshare. It's more like 9%, not 30%.
