Increasingly, computer users are using different folders, drives, and even different computers (such as a laptop and a desktop) to store and retrieve files. There are new sources of files coming from every direction: digital cameras, e-mail, cell phones, portable media players, camcorders, PDAs, and laptops. Yet managing hundreds or thousands of files is still largely a manual operation. In some cases it is necessary to move files from one place to another; in other cases there is a need to keep two storage locations exactly in sync. Some users manage files manually, dragging and dropping from one place to another and keeping a mental card catalog in their heads. Others use one or more applications of one sort or another to provide this functionality for them. | ||

| Not sure what you're talking about, TL. The utility is a tiny 811KB. If you're referring to the .NET Framework 1.1 runtime, it's the foundation that all current and future MS products will be based on. You need only download it a single time, so just do it and be done with it. If all of these MS utilities and apps didn't use a common code base, they'd each be probably 5MB larger in download size and you'd be griping that MS downloads are so bloated. |

Well, I guess I pissed in mooresa56's wheaties. So be it. I don't mind :)
I'm just not a fan of huge runtimes, and a requirement of an external runtime being a requirement on a user. Not much to get all excited about now, is it? Oh, and mooresa. Maybe you should have taken the blue pill... The reality that someone might not agree with you is a bitch, ain't it. TL |

It's this kind of thinking that causes things like 400MB Microsoft Office folders, which doesn't even include the shared libraries the installer piddles all over the place. I miss the good old days, where tight, efficient programming was an art to strive for and be appreciated. One of the best examples of this was a word processor called WriteNow. Coded in 100% assembly lanquage. It fit on a 400K floppy, and could run rings around earlier versions of Word. Speed? There was nothing like it. And today it's required to have a 22MB (or whatever) runtime to execute an 811k program that pretty much copies files for a living. Yep. That's progress... TL |
