MSN Virtual Earth: Microsoft Takes on Google | |

A month ago, while writing about Google Earth, I mentioned MSN Virtual Earth, Microsoft's new foray into aerial mapping and local information. The service went live last night (in a Google-style public beta), and is available at virtualearth.msn.com. And I've just spent some time playing with it. You don't need to delve very deeply into MSN Virtual Earth to realize that, similar name aside, it's not really a Google Earth rival, yet alone a Google Earth killer. Google Earth is a hefty Windows download; Virtual Earth is browser-based (mostly--more on that in a moment). Google Earth does amazing, earth-spanning animations; Virtual Earth doesn't. | ||

| Am I the only one capable of seeing that MSN Virtual Earth is not set to compete with Google Earth? It is to compete against Google Maps. Besides "Google Earth" is not even a Google program, its been around for years and was aquired when they purchased Keyhole. (Wait, wait wait...does this mean a big company saw something a little company was doing and purchased it to use for their own good...and it wasnt Microsoft...I thought only Microsoft couldnt come up with their own ideas!!! Oh, or is it no one cares when its not Microsoft) I'm not dissing Google, their map program does seem to respond quicker and the arial images are ages newer than the TerraServer images MS is using. This is of course because when they purchased Keyhole, they purchased all the images they are using in Google Maps as well. Microsoft is good at playing catch-up, just watch. |

| #1: the difference is that every second word out of MS mouth is 'innovate'. MS talks about innovation all the time, yet they seem to be better at stealing others tech or buying them outright than actually coming up with anythign original these days. |

WTC? Serious? Geesh, the week after September 11th there was a patch for Flight Simulator to remove them.
Now they forgot to take care of that? Where they so in a rush tomake that available or what? I haven't looked at WTC in any so you tell me... |

You have to give Microsoft credit for cobbling this entire Virtual Earth thingie together in the 30 days since google maps went online.
Do you guys really believe that bull? You all give MSFT too much credit for their ability to "catch up" and not nearly enough credit for prepping a service alongside google. Google just released 30 days earlier (without their hybrid view, I might add). Big deal. |
